Biography

Rebecca Bender was born on October 19, 1825, the daughter of John Bender and Margreta Barbara Stein. No baptism record has been found for her. She may have been baptized with the name Margreta Rebecca Bender (or similar) as she is referred to as "Margreta Bender" on her marriage record.

Her grandson Truman Hey kept genealogical records, in which he wrote the following about her:

"Grandmother Rebecca Bender. Born in Lebanon Co. Pa. Oct. 19, 1825. Daughter of John Bender and Margaret Stone, Both Pennsylvania Dutch Married Jan. 14, 1844 Had 11 children, 78 grandchildren, (30 still living) Died Sept. 15, 1891, 66" [1]

Barbara married husband Joel (Hoy) Hey on January 14, 1844 in Zion Evangelical Church in Jonestown, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. [2] [3]

Their children include:

  1. Sarah b1845 -- later Gurtner, then Flesher
  2. William B. b1847
  3. Mariah b1850 -- later Bricker
  4. Susanna b1853 -- later LaTurner, then Anderson,
  5. Adam B. b1855
  6. Amanda Elizabeth b1858 -- later Miller, then Macklin
  7. Lydia Rebecca b1860 -- later LaTurner
  8. Christena Ann b1864 -- later Clark, then Reo, then Smith
  9. John George b1866
  10. Aaron b1869 -- d1869

In 1859 she moved with Joel and their children to Rock Creek, Wells County, Indiana.

She died on September 14, 1891 in Bluffton, Wells County and is buried in Horeb Cemetery, Uniondale, Wells County, Indiana. There is a headstone there which reads "Mother Rebecca Hey 1825-1891." [4]

Research Notes

No baptism record has been found for Rebecca. The names of her parents come from the genealogical records kept by her grandson Truman Hey.

Other evidence of her parents is her marriage at Zion Evangelical, the same church where her parents married and baptized some of their children. She and Joel also settled several parcels away from John H. Bender, Rebecca’s half brother, in Rock Creek Township, Indiana. Also, no evidence has been found of any other couple named John Bender and Margaret Stone (or similar) in the area who would likely be the parents of Rebecca Bender.
