John Bendyshe, born 10 April 1791, was son of Richard Bendyshe of Barrington in Cambridgeshire and his wife, Jane Jervis. [1][2]He followed his brother, Robert, into the Royal Navy joining HMS Queen commanded by Captain Manley Dixon, as a First Class Volunteer on 8 January 1805. [3] Sometime in 1807 word came that his brother, Robert, had been lost in the sinking of HMS Blenheim somewhere near Madagascar. [4]

On 10 August 1824 in Paris he married Catherine Matcham, daughter of George Matcham and his wife, Kitty Nelson sister of Horatio Nelson, hero of Trafalgar. [5][6]She bore him four sons and four daughters during their eleven year marriage according to both Burke and the Naval Biographical dictionary. However there was a ninth child, George, born about 1830 [7] and died in 1838. [8]

On 21 October 1833 he married again, His bride was Anna Maria Watson, daughter of Sir Charles Watson, Bart of Wratting Park in Cambridgeshire. [9] she bore him a daughter Anna Maria in about 1833. [10]

John died in 1855, his death being registered at Royston in Hertfordshire. [11] He was buried at Barrington in Cambridgeshire on 22 December 1855 [12] and was succeeded in his estates by his eldest son, John. [13]
