Theodore was born on 1 November 1849 in Bloomington, Davis, Iowa, United States. He was the son of Theodore Siphen Benefiel and Mary Jane (Dunlavy) Benefiel.^[1]

When Theodore was 25 he married Nancy Ann Hodge on 5 September 1875 in Hendricks, Indiana, United States. The couple had 9 children: Clarence Wilbur Benefiel, Otto Gilbert Benefiel, Ida Gertrude Benefiel, Jerusha Jane Benefiel, Ada V Benefiel, William Claud Benefiel, Charley Theodore Benefiel, Walter Alonzo Benefiel and Daisy Estella Benefiel.^[2]
