Bessie was born in Kansas in 1882, the daughter of William Benefiel and Mattie Rawlinson.^[1]

She was a "[s]chool teacher at Kingman, KS, for many years.  After the death of her brother's first wife, she took their son Malcolm into her home.  He was an epileptic and she helped him to grow up and take his place in the society around him."^[2]

Bessie passed away in 1957 and is buried in Kingman, Kansas.^[3][4]
