Henry Benfield was born around 1790, probably in Linton, Derbyshire, England. His place of birth varies throughout the census returns.
The lives of their children suggest that Henry & Sarah lived in/near:
1829: Church Gresley (William baptised 2 August)
1833: Church Gresley (Dorothy married 8 December)
On 6 June 1841, Henry is living in Church Gresley with his wife Sarah and sons George (14) and William (11). They live next door to their married daughter and her family.
Henry works as a Wheelwright, and was born in Derbyshire. [1]
On 2 October, 1844 Sarah died of consumption, aged 58.[2][3] She is buried in Church Gresley, although no grave marker has been found. [4][5]
Note: Sarah's death certificate states she died on 2 October and the death was registered on the 6th. South Derbyshire BDM notes her burial on 6th October and FamilySearch has burial on the 11th. I have assumed the the burial would not be on day of registration, so the 11th is correct - but this is my assumption only. Wilkins-1208 12:00, 21 September 2014 (EDT)
Only one month after Sarah is buried, Henry married again...
Elizabeth Lowe (nee Salmon) on 12 November 1844 in Chilvers Coton, Warwickshire. [6][7][8]
1851 finds Henry in Mill Lane, Fazeley. He's working as a Wheelwright and describes his birthplace as Linton, Derbyshire (although Ancestry mis-transcribe it as Lincoln). He is living with his new wife Elizabeth, and they have a visitor on census night.[9]
The 1861 Census shows Henry still wheelwrighting and living with Elizabeth, but they have moved to Nelson's Yard, Atherstone, Warwickshire. At this time he states that he was born in Derbyshire, but doesn't know which town. [10]
In the 1871 census Henry was living in Warwickshire. He was lodging at Moorfield's farm Stonydelph, and listed as an 80 year old carpenter. He is also a widower (again) and giving his place of birth as Twycross.[11]
In 1873 Henry died. [12]He is described as living at Freasley, Atherstone, Warwickshire and the informant is Henry Booton - the family he was lodging with in 1881. (It is not yet known if Mr Booton was a relative). The cause of death being Age and Debility, Chronic Bronchitis.[13] Henry died on 19 August 1873, and was buried in Polesworth on 23 of that month.
