Hi Anders,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, working with members of the projects which coordinate them is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

Use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find one which best fits your research focus. Review the project pages for special guidelines and to learn how to collaborate with the project members.

Let me know if you have trouble finding projects which fit your focus. Click my name, then ask in the comment section of my page.

Remember to cite reliable sources in pre-1700 profiles you manage, or edit. (See: Pre-1700 Reliable Sources).

Hi Debi,

Why do you have the limit to upload gedcom-files with as little as 5000 individuals? In the short version of my family-tree there are about 14.000 individuals.

Best regards

Hi Anders,

GEDCOM file sizes are limited because the process to compare the records to existing profiles is both machine and personally intense. Once the file has been uploaded, you will receive a link to the GEDCOMpare report. You will use the report to compare suggested profiles which might be for the same person and set each to matched or rejected. One of our mentors created a guide for the GEDCOMpare process that explains it all in detail. It is full of tips on making the most efficient use of your data. Personally, I recommend starting with a very small file (example, yourself and your ancestors to the 2xgreat-grandparent level for approx 31 records) to understand the process.

Please do let me know if you have any questions about how WikiTree works, even if they seem minor. My rule of thumb when I started was to search for an answer for five minutes, then reach out to my Greeters, and then resume searching. I might have found the answer before they got back to me but they sometimes offered a different way of doing the same thing which was easier. We are always here to help.

See you in the branches,

Debi ~ WikiTree Greeter
