Biography
Origin
Nils Bengtsson was born around 1580 as the son of the farmer Bengt Jönsson at Tostarp södergård and the brother of Jöns Bengtsson. Bengt Jönsson was the son of Jöns Haraldsson, a farmer in the parish of Rydaholm.[1]
Occupation
In 1605 Nils had become a lieutenant and September 17 (Julian calendar, September 27 Gregorian calendar) that year he took part in the Battle of Kirchholm in Poland during the Polish-Swedish War (1600-29). He was taken prisoner and was released in 1612.[1]
Once back home again he immediately went back to serving his country in the Kalmar War (1611-13).
In 1619 Nils became sergeant (förare in Swedish during that time) at the company of Måns Pedersson (Stierna). He took part in the siege and attack on Riga in 1621 during the Polish-Swedish War (1600-29). He continued serving during the Polish-Swedish war between 1626 and 1629 and became lieutenant at the company of Erik Bengtsson in 1628. In 1635 he was moved to Germany and took part, as far as is known, in the battle of Wittstock September 24, 1636 (Julian calendar, October 4 Gregorian calender).[1]
Family
Nils was married to Cacilia Månsdotter.[1]
Death
Nils died in 1662.[1]
Estates
- Åboda in Slätthög parish, given for a certain time to Nils November 29, 1612, probably as a reward for his achievements in the Kalmar War (1611-13).[1]
- Lökaryd in the parish of Rydaholm, to live at and possess for as long as he or his wife should live from November 5, 1621.
Research Notes
Hermfelt has come to the conclusion that due to Nils swift rise in the military, he or his wife was most likely in some way related to colonel Peder Månsson Lood who lived at Hjälmsänga in the parish of Rydaholm and was the cavalry captain of the company that Nils served in during the 1620's.[1]
