Biography

OBED(IAH) BENJAMIN^ (Obediah, Joseph, John) birth date unknown; the son of Obediah and Mary (Yarrington) Benjamin; bapt. March 9. 1729 at the North or Second Church of Preston, Conn, died May 17, 1816 in Gaspereau, Kings, Nova Scotia. He is buried in the Old Wolfville Cemetery, Highland Avenue, Wolfville, Nova Scotia.[1]

He m. 1) March 27, 1755 at First Cong. Church of Griswold, Conn,[2][3][4][5] Mary Hurd (Herd). She was born about 1731 and died December 28, 1786 at Horton Township, King Co., Nova Scotia. He m.2) July 9, 1787 at Horton[6] Deborah Strong. No data on her.

He and his family left Connecticut via New London in May 1760. Obadiah arrived at Horton's Landing on June 4, 1760 with his wife Mary Hurd and two sons Stephen and Caleb. They were part of the main 22-ship party of the New England Planters. He obtained one share (500 acres) of the original allotment of the Township of Horton.[7] He established a grist mill and saw mill on the Gaspereau River, and appeared in the Horton poll tax rolls of 1770.[8] By the time of his death was able to give a farm to each his four sons, Abel, Jacob, Stephen, and Caleb.[9]
