Ivan Alfred Benjaminsson was born on November 18, 1878 in Nora bergsförsamling, Örebro, Sweden.[1] He is a son of Johan Benjaminsson and Carolina Persdotter. They lived at Stålbo in Hammarby.[2][3][4]
Ivan took the family name Bergström. He was a sailor. The last anyone heard from him was a postcard from Vladivistok in Russia in 1916. It seems that he did have a child, because a grandson of his was found.[5]
Still unmarried. Note that he registered with Stockholms Sjömanshus as number 429 in May 1903.[7]
He is registered at Stockholms sjömanshus May 5, 1903 and removed in 1922 (no reason given).[8]
He seems to have worked in the engine room on the ship "Kronprins Gustaf Adolf" between January 4 (1914 or 1915) and May 15, 1915 when he disembarked in Göteborg.[9]
The next ship was M/S P. Christophersen, home port Stockholm, owned by A Johnason, which he embarked in Göteborg on June 11, 1915.[10]
However, he did not return to Sweden with the others but disembarked in Buenos Aires Sept 18, 1915.[11]
That is where any info of his whereabouts as a Swedish sailor seem to end.
