John Bennett was christened in Compton Abbas Oct. 1, 1697 to William Bennett. [1][2]
John was William Bennett's second son, but became his heir when his older brother, William, died in 1724, a year after his marriage.
John married Ann Burgis. "John Bennett, also of Twyford and afterwards of Hartgrove, was a man of property, as he may well have needed to be, having had twelve children by his first wife and four by his second. This first wife, who proved so prolific, was named Anne and was the daughter of John Burgis of Fontmell Magna, Dorset. She died at the early age of forty-four."[3]
"John Bennett...inherited Callis Place and he already held lands at Twyford and Hartgrove, when in 1743, he added to his property by taking an estate at Fontmell Magna for his own life and that of his eldest surviving son, John Burgis Bennett and his daughter Jenevora. He died in 1772 at the age of seventy-five and was buried at Fontmell Magna." [4]
John wrote his will in October of 1772 and died before May 30, 1773, when it was proved. [5]
"The BENETT Arms in Semley. There is a sign
bearing the arms of Bennett of Pythouse outside
the inn at Semley. Land in Semley formed part
of the Pythouse estate in 1580 when it belonged
to a family called Pytt alias Bennett in the 1563
Herald's Visitation." Further, in 1623 Thomas
Bennett purchased Callis Place and in 1631
granted it to his third son William in whose
family it remained until acquired by Thomas
Benett of Pythouse in 1796 following the
death of John Bennett in l772." John Benett of
Pythouse bought 441 acres of Semley manor
between 1806 and 1820 and in 1839 his land
in Semley extended to over 1,000 acres.
The Bennett family's land in Semley subsequently
formed part of the Pythouse estate, much
of which was sold by the trustees of Evelyn
Fane-Benett- Stanford and by his kinsman Sir (Horace) Anthony Rumbold, Bt. between the
1950s and the 1970s." Wiltshire Archaelogical and Natural History Magazine. [6][7]
