Disputed information

Clarification of mistakes in the above profile:

  1. Sarah (Hampton) Durrett (very briefly Durrett) 2 separate m. records in 1742 say, she married Col. Richard Durrett of Abermale, VA, (he was b: in 1705 NOT 1722) on their 1st marriage record it showed him b: in 1722 and lists his brother as his father.
  2. There is a 2nd record of his marriage to Sarah Hampton. It gives his corrected b: date as 1705 and gave his correct father and mother's names. There is no question this was the same Col Richard Durrett as on both records he was still marrying Sarah Hampton.
  3. The very next year in 1743 this same Col Richard Durrett marries: Sarah Elizabeth (Marshall) of Caroline county, VA (2 of her sisters are ancestors of mine through marriages to my Estes and Yates line) Col Richard Durrett was also on various land transaction records with her father William Marshall.
  4. So it is Sarah Elizabeth Marshall and NOT Sarah Hampton who was his 3rd wife (or 2nd, if the marriage to Sarah Hampton was ended/annulled or never went beyond bands being announced, or a betrothal.
  5. Col. Richard Durrett had at least one earlier marriage to Abigail Terrell and she is the mother of his older set of children and Sarah Elizabeth (Marshall) Durrett was mother to the later ones after their marriage in 1743.
  6. Sarah Hampton did not die, she later married Rice Bennett in 1749 and had a family with him, then after he died in 1772 she remarried to Thomas Linthicum in 1773 after his wife died.
  7. I also believe that she (in her final years as Sarah Linthicum) died in 1810 in Liberty, or Lynchburg, VA. Not on the above given death date of 1782 (that is the death date of Sarah Elizabeth (Marshall) Durrett, not Sarah (Hampton) Durrett, Bennett, Linthicum.
  8. Sarah Hampton's birth date. From later records it shows that she was b: in 1724 - 1726, not in 1718 (before her parents even married) or 1722 she was not their eldest child) so this also shows what a large age difference Col. Richard Durrett TRUE age made between them. When Sarah (Hampton) Durrett later married Rice Bennett the age difference was that she was 4 - 6 yrs older than him. I think the above given birth date/year was that of Sarah Elizabeth (Marshall) Durrett or errors. Lilly F Bennett or here on wikitree.com I am Bennett 8675.

Commentary

All of the info needing to be corrected here by me, comes from Sarah (Hampton) being confused with Sarah Elizabeth Marshall, just because they were both Sarahs. Just because these are such a long standing errors doesn't make it fact! I wish it was possible to get some expert to sort this out for once and all. Facts and fictions just don't match and lead to a lot of confusion that is passed on and on. If you keep the above erroneous info attached, then please also leave these notes of mine, then people can do a search and compare the various records and decide which to choose. I like facts better than fiction myself.

Additional Comment

I agree we have conflation here. Probably due to merges that maybe should not have happened. Looking through changes for Sarah Hampton-1959 I see the import was for a birthdate and location that I included in originally merging with the current co-manager. Then when a merge included 2 Durrett children I bumped Sarah's DOB back to accommodate. But seeing all of these Durrett children and living and dying in different parts of VA I don't think the marriage to Durrett can be supported. Others seem to think "William" has been confused with "Richard"

I'd like to work on this before more merges are proposed that could further complicate.

So for Hampton-1959 I'd like to remove the current parents for her and her marriage to Durrett and the 2 children. Also bump her DOB and location back to what was originally posted on upload. Any objections? Contact me Mitchell-17863. Thanks!

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Sarah by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Sarah:

Due to the recent activity on this profile I must say again that the Sarah who married Rice Bennett and Thomas Linthicum sr was Not This Woman. There are sources for Sarah Linthicum (Unknown-427861) and not one actual source given for this profile. The death date given is that for Thomas Linthicum, not his widow.

Death in 1782 is not correct IMO. Sarah (Widow Bennett) survived Thomas Linthicum, was in his will, rejected the will, had land divided for her etc etc. Was probably on tax rolls.

One source suggests that she died in what would now be W VA in 1818. There is a entry in an 1818 will index for Hampshire Co., WVa for Sarah Linthicum but i have no proof this is the same person.

Hampton-1914 and Hampton-251 appear to represent the same person because: Sarah (Hampton) Durrett-251 and Sarah (Hampton) Linthicum-1914 are not sibling with the same names. It is actually due to a lot of confusion over Sarah Hampton b: abt 1724-26 (most likely the latter 26 as she has two sibs b: in 24 and 25) married only briefly (two records both in 1742) to Col. Richard Durrett (actually b: in 1705 not 1722) and he married Sarah Elizabeth Marshall in 1743 (she was the mother of his younger children and his widow when he died in 1784 (so her death date is also erroneous) After her marriage was annulled or a quick divorce etc, from Col. Richard Durrett, Sarah Hampton left home to reside with other family in Cumberland Co, VA. It was there in 1749 she married Rice Bennett who was abt 4 yrs younger than her. Yet she long out lived him. When he died in 1772 she then remarried to Thomas Linthicum 4th there in Cumberland Co, VA (listed on the record as Mrs. Sarah Bennett) in Oct 1773. I hope to attach all these records from my ancestry.com family trees, but have not had a chance to do so yet. There is a lot of records and family connections that support all of this. Lilly B

I removed from Sarah (Hampton) Durrett 251(whom I want to merge with Sarah (Hampton) Linthicum 1914) the two children listed as she was not the mother of Col. Richard Durrett (who needs to be merged with Richard Durrett) 's older or younger children. His older children's mother was Abigail Terrell whom he married in 1734 or 1738 (two records show these different yrs) and his younger children's mother was Sarah Elizabeth Marshall whom he married in 1743. She was also his widow when he died in 1784, so her death date is also erroneous. Sarah Hampton was remarried to Rice Bennett in 1749 in Cumberland Co, VA, then after he died in 1772 she was again remarried to Thomas Linthicum 4th in Oct 1773. She was not sister to another Sarah Hampton, they are the same person. Lilly B
