1913 - Obituary

A. Bennett Summoned -- Well Known Resident of Camp Point, Illinois, Passed Away Saturday Morning -- Was Ill Six Weeks -- A Native of Indiana But Had Resided in Adams County Since 1857

Alvin Howard Bennett (1833-1913), a resident of Camp Point, Illinois for the past ten years, died Saturday morning at 8:45 o'clock following an illness of six weeks duration. Mr. Bennett, however, had been in failing health for two years past, but during the greater part of that time was able to be up and about and despite the infirmities of old age which were so steadily creeping upon him, was always jovial and sought to add to the pleasures of those about him rather than depress them in an effort to seek sympathy for himself.

Mr. Bennett was a son of Thomas Howard Bennett (1808-1877) and Rachel Gaither (Prather) Bennett (1811-1899) and was born in Clark county, Indiana, near Utica, October 20, 1833. On February 17, 1856 he was married to Miss Susan Melvina (Barneby,) Bennett (1835-1874) and to this union were born seven children, one of whom died in infancy and one in early childhood. Those surviving are: Mrs. Arvilla (Bennett) Camp (18556-1927) of Cozad, Nebraska; Mrs. Adda (Bennett) Smith (1862-1934) of Loraine, Illinois; Mrs. (unknown) (Bennett) Pearce (?-?) wife of Lawrence Pearce of Hubbard, Ohio; Emery E. Bennett (1870-1949) of Golden, Illinois; and Miss Olive Bennett (1865-1943) at home. In the fall of 1857 he emigrated with his family to Adams county, locating about seven miles north of Camp Point, in Houston township. There he continued to reside until ten years ago when he moved to Camp Point, which has since been his home. Mrs. Susan Melviana (Barnebey) Bennett (1835-1874) died July 11, 1874.

On June 27, 1876 Mr. Bennett was again married to Mrs. Tabitha Sue (Lowary) Bennett (1841-1898). Three children were born to this union. Mrs. Daisy Mae (Bennett) Horney (1877-1975) of Bowen, Illinois; Thomas E. Bennett (1878-1952) of Loraine, Illinois; and Fred Noakes Bennett (1880-1955) of Camp Point, Illinois.

Mr. Bennett was the second time beraved by the loss of his companion, who passed away in August, 1898.

On July 17, 1902 he was married to Mrs. Margaret Ann (Whitmore) Dawson Bennett (1849-1933) of Plymouth, Illinois, who has so tenderly cared for him during his months of illness and who is left to mourn his departure.

In the spring of 1903 Mr. Bennett retired from farming, moving to Camp Point where he has since resided. During the winter of 1857-58 he united with the Methodist Episcopal church at Ebenezer, and ever since has led a true, Christian life. He was a member of the Camp Point church at the time of his death.

Mr. Bennett was a man of sterling worth, honorably and upright in all his dealings with his fellow men, kind and loving in his family life and earnest and conscientious in his religious life.

Besides the relatives mentioned in the foregoing, two brothers and four sisters are left to mourn their loss. The brothers are, Thomas Jefferson Bennett (1847-1931) of Wasco, California and Ezra Douglas Bennett (1855-1936) of York, Nebraska. The sisters are, Mrs. Emily Elizabeth (Bennett) Jacobs (1835-1920) of Golden, Illinois; Mrs. Nancy Ann (Bennett) Strickler (1841-1917) of York, Nebraska; Mrs. Catherine Zerelda "Kate" (Bennett) Lyle (1849-1931) of Waco, Nebraska; and Mrs. Sarah (Bennett) Strickler (1837-1921) of Lawrence, Kasas. There are also twenty-five grand-children and four great grand-children.

The funeral was conducted at the M. E. church, Monday morning at 10 o'clock; by the pastor, Rev. J. S. Smith, following which the remains were laid at rest in Ebenezer cemetery.
