Nelson Evening Mail, Volume xxx, Issue 275, 20 November 1896 FATALITY AT THE TOPHOUSE. DEATH OF A SHEARER. Constable Knapp has reported to Sergt. McArdle the death of a man at the Tophouse. The constable states that a man named John Bennett, while on his way to tlhe Birchville Station for the shearing, met with an accident on Monday last, which has bean the cause of his death. It seems that Bennett was running after some pigs at Tophouse, when he stumbled and fell heavily over a log to the ground. Nothing was thought of it at the time, as he could walk and dress and undress himself. On Wednesday last Mr Franklyn, of the Tophouse, on returning home from Belgrove, saw that Bennett was ill, and got him to take a hot bath, and put him to bed at once. He could not eat then and began retching. On Thursday Mr Franklyn got the man into his express upon a mattress and started for Belgrove, telegraphing to Dr Pearless to meet him, but on the way Bennett expired. Inquiries ate being made as to the relations of the deceased, about whom nothing \ is known. Arrangements have been made for an inquest to be hold at Wakefield to-day.
An inquest was held at Wakefield yesterday on the body of John Bennett, whose death at the Tophouse was reported in last evening's Mail. The medical evidence showed that death was not due to the accidental falling over a log as seemed to be the case, but rather to the effects of exposure and poor living whilst prospecting during the winter. A verdict, in accordance with the medical testimony was returned.
