Jannetje "Jane" Bennet was born on 16 September 1733 on her parents' farm in Bensalem Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Willem Bennet (bef.1704-1775) and his wife, Gertye (Suydam) Bennet (1705-1784), both born in New York City (Brooklyn). They had moved to Bucks County after their 1726 marriage in Kings County, New York. [1] [2] Jannetje was baptized on 21 October 1733 at the First Reformed Church (Church of the Three-Mile Run), New Brunswick, Middlesex, New Jersey, (no witnesses recorded), according to information from Michael Morrisey in 2012, citing the Proceedings of the New Jersey Historical Society, Vol. 11, page 401. Baptism: Jannetje; parents: William Bennet, Gertje. [3]
Jannetje was apparently rebaptised on 23 April 1734 in Bensalem Twp., Bucks County, Province of Pennsylvania. [1]
Her father's will was dated in 1766 at Bucks Co., Pennsylvania, proved 20 Mar 1775. William Bennett of Northampton Twp. Blacksmith. Wife Charity and sons Isaac and William, executors. Children Isaac, William, John, Leanna wife of Thomas Craven, Yanaea wife of James Vansant and Idah Bennett. Granddaughter Charity Bennet, daughter of son Richard, dec'd. She is listed in her mother's will as "Yanaca, wife of James Vansant." (seems this could be a mispelling in the transcription?). [4] Her will was dated on 28 August 1775 at Bucks Co., Pennsylvania, proved 4 Nov 1784. Charity Bennett of Northampton Twp., widow. "Far advanced in years." Sons Isaac, William and John Bennett, executors. Daughter Lena, wife of Thomas Craven; Yanaea, wife of James Vansant; and Iaah (Idah) wife of Dirck Hogeland. Yanaca Bennett widow of son Richard, deceased. Charity VanPelt only daughter of son Richard, dec'd. and her son Richard VanPelt. Witnesses: Matthew Bennett, Robert Loller.
Jannetje married Jacobus Van Sandt August 23, 1756.[1] Jane Bennett is listed as spouse of James Van Sant in the DAR Patriot Index. [5]
The couple settled on a farm in Northampton Township, Bucks County, Province of Pennsylvania, in 1764 and were the parents of thirteen children.[1] Fifteen children are named on her FamilySearch personal details sheet: [6] Another list is given from A Genealogical and Personal History of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Vol. I pg. 26. [7]
Jannetje "Jane" (Bennet) Van Sandt died on April 24, 1784 and was buried at the Low Dutch Reformed Church Cemetery, Richboro, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA [8]
Re: parents (Willem and Gertye). This Jannetje (also called Jane) is listed in her mother's will as "Yanaea, the wife of James Vansant." Phoenetically, this could be a version of Jannetje or Jane. She is also listed as the wife of James and daughter of William and Charity Bennett in Davis' History of Bucks County, PA. If Charity is the anglicized version of Gertye, then this all adds up.
Previously, her parents were listed as Abram Bennet and Jannetje Suydam. These two were witnesses to the birth of Ida, Willem and Jannetje's daughter, so the families were close (in fact, according to Chris Chester's Brouwer Database, Abram and Willem's fathers were brothers - so they were first cousins). Also in the database, Abram and Jannetje did have it seems two daughters named Jannetje (one died young and the other married John Roberts.
