James Bennett was born at Oxford in Oxfordshire, in about 1811. [1] James was christened at St Giles Church, Oxford, on 24th March 1811.

James Matthew Bennett, bachelor, and Mary Bennett, widow, both of the parish, were married at St Peter le Bailey in Oxford on 8 April 1833. The witnesses were called Thomas George and Ann George. [2]

He was a printer. [1] [3]

The 1841 census was on Sunday 6th June and he records his age as 30. Note that in the 1841 Census ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 years but his actual age was almost certainly 30 because the practice at that time was for baptism's to take place soon after birth. The 1841 Census (Friars Street, Parish of St Ebbe, Oxford) shows his daughters to be Louisa (aged 2) Ann (4), Amelia (6), Mary (11). His wife, Mary, is aged 35 and there is a another male resident called George George (71) (possibly because his surname was unknown). George may have been his father or the father of his wife, Mary.

The 1851 census was on Sunday, 30th March, and shows him to be living at Friars Wharf in St Ebb, Oxford, with his wife Mary and three of his five daughters. daughters, Emily (aged 4), Louisa (11), Mary (20). Occupation: Printer pressman. [1]

James Bennett, printer, died at Friar's Wharf in Oxford on 25 September 1855. [4] [3]

Research Notes

Note: a child called James Mathew Bennett was baptised at the parish church of St Mary Magdalen in Oxford on 18 October 1809, as the son of James and Elizabeth Bennett. [5]

Note also: the child baptised at St Giles on 24 March 1811 was described as the illegitimate son of Elizabeth Bennett. [6] So (a) that child's mother's maiden name was probably Bennett (b) that child's father's name was probably not Bennett. (If his father's name George has been derived from the 1841 census: George George was his wife's father.)

Given:

  • his age (not strong evidence, admittedly)
  • his name when married
  • his wife's first husband was possibly a child of the same parents...

I would think there is a possibility that his actual baptism was in 1809.

George George (really his name, apparently) was his wife's father's name, according to her baptism.

I have added a potential baptism in the Research Notes, which I would think needs consideration in determining who James's parents were.

Bennett-4294 and Bennett-8074 appear to represent the same person because: Same birth date/place

Names of all five daughters also match (so far I have only entered Louisa Sarah, who is my ancestor)
