James Charles Bennett married Mary Ella Winfree about 1820.[1]
Shot dead in cold blood by Kirkpatrick's raiders (Union forces attached to Sherman's March) on the front porch of his house south of the present town of Wadesboro, NC less than a month before the end of the conflict.
He was buried under tree next to his house; grave unmarked.
The house and property was used on location in the filming of Speilberg's "The Color Purple" major box office release.
