Biography

Henrietta Bennett is the daughter of John and Frances . She was christened on March 16 1834 at Bromley, Kent. She emigrated to New Zealand about 1851 arriving in Canterbury. Henrietta met Henry Dench who in early 1852 set off to Victoria to join the gold diggers and followed him to Australia. They married in Melbourne that same year. They returned to New Zealand, this time to Wellington where they bought land and later sailed to Melbourne. Henry and Henrietta returned to New Zealand in 1862 and this time the destination was Dunedin. Henry became active in the community and became of member of the Port Chalmers Borough Council 1868-9, Mayor 1871-73, JP and a publican. He established a restaurant known as 'Dench's Hotel' and also owned 'Chicks Hotel' & the 'Crescent'. He was responsible for organising an appeal to raise the funds needed to build an english style church which was erected on Scotia Street. Henrietta (Bennett) Dench died age 52 and is buried at Old Port Chalmers cemetery, Dunedin
