John was baptised on 12 January 1817 at Perranzabuloe, Cornwall, England to parents John and Susannah BENNETT. [1]
In 1851 he was a lead miner living at Perranzabuloe, with his wife Mary, and children Jane, 9, Susan, 8, John 4, Richard 3 and Philip 1. [2]
He was a farmer in Cornwall in 1861. [3]
Arrived in Adelaide, South Australia aboard Adamant in 1863. [4]

The death of his son Phillip Bennett reported in the newspapers has his name as James Bennetts or Mr J. Bennetts, Butcher of High-street, Kensington.
The marriage notice for his daughter Susan Bennett in the South Australian Weekly Chronicle, 20 October 1866, states she was the eldest surviving daughter of John Bennetts of Kensington. [6] The marriage notice for Susan again in 1872 states she was the eldest surviving daughter, this time of the late John Bennetts of High-street, Kensington. [7]
