Johann Gergard emigrated from Prussia with his parents and siblings, they arrived at Port of New York on 7 October 1842 aboard the ship Pauline. They were among the early settlers of Johnsburg, McHenry County, Illinois, The Benolkin family left Johnsburg for Minnesota some time after the birth of their daughter Julianna Benolkin, who was born on 27 November 1870, died soon after, and the birth of their daughter Maria Kate Benolkin who was born in St Anthony, Hennepin County, Minnesota on 6 February 1872.

Johann Gerhard and Catharina were the parents of fifteen known children
