Samuel Benson was born in Middleborough, Massachusetts. He married Rebecca Hunt, a native of Martha's Vineyard, and came to Penobscot county, first settling in Carmel in 1798.
He was a soldier and non-commissioned officer in the Revolutionary War, and took part in many of the engagements. Served with Capt. Edward Sparrow - Plymouth County Militia and Col. Jacob.
He followed the hotel business during the latter part of his life, and built the first hotel in Carmel. He was the father of twelve children. He died in Carmel in 1848.
His children's names were Asa, Abisha, William, Rebecca, Susannah, Samuel, Permelia, Joseph, Sallie, Peleg, Elizabeth. Hon. John Benson was born in Carmel. March 2, 1809.
