Biography

Jonathan Benson was the son of John Benson and Elizabeth (Washburn) Benson of Bridgewater, Massachusetts.[1] No record of his birth has been found. However, his gravestone says that he died on December 16, 1788 in the 71st year of his age,[2][3] which means he was born in 1717 or possibly late December 1716.

Jonathan married Martha Snell in Bridgewater on November 7, 1740, in a ceremony performed by the Reverend John Shaw.[4][5][1]

Jonathan and Martha had the following children, all in Bridgewater:

  1. John, b. June 28, 1742[6][1]
  2. Eunice, b. January 17, 1744,[6][1] m. John Hardin 1766[1]
  3. Mary, b. April 6, 1745, [7][1] m. Benjamin Hayward Jr. 1767[1]
  4. Martha, b. February 24, 1747[7], d. October 20, 1747[2]
  5. Martha, b. April 6, 1749,[7][1] m. Elisha Waterman of Halifax 1774[1]
  6. Lois, b. March 16, 1751,[7][1] m. Cornelius Washburn Jr.[1]
  7. Jonathan, b. December 31, 1752[6][1]
  8. Ebenezer, b. January 20, 1755[6][1]
  9. David, b. September 12, 1756[6][1]
  10. Jonah, b. September 13, 1759[6][1]

Jonathan's gravestone says that he was a Lieutenant, but no sources have been found that indicate the nature of his military service.[3]

Jonathan died of small pox on December 16, 1788[2][3] and was buried in the Smallpox Cemetery in Bridgewater. The inscription on his gravestone reads:

O remember death. In memory of
Lieut. Jonathan Benson who died of small-pox
Dec. 16, 1788 in the 71st year of his age.
My flesh shall slumber in the ground
Till the archangel's solemn sound
Shall wake my dust, and bid it rise
To join my soul and mount the skies.[3]
