William J Benson was born about 1796. His birthplace is unknown, but was probably in Bladen County, North Carolina. William was the first of 11 known children of Francis Benson and Sarah Bigford.
He married Sarah Elizabeth Cook on 20 February 1823 in North Carolina. Together they raised a family of 11 known children: Robert D., Ann, Stephen, Margaret, John Andrews, Sarah Jane, Nancy, William Calvin, Lucy Amanda, Mary Luerer, and James Franklin Benson.
William passed away in about 1855, most likely in Marion County, Georgia.
