Biography

Levin was born about 1752 in Kent County, Delaware. He is the son of William Benson and Tabitha Kennedy. He passed away on 13 June 1836 in Lincoln County, Tennessee.[1]

Marriages & Children

Levin was married at least twice. The name of his first wife is uncertain. Proposed individuals for first wife are Nancy Unknown, Jane Hickman and Elizabeth Messick. Known children of first marriage include:

  1. Willis Daniel Bensin, 1775-1848
  2. Betsy Benson, 1777
  3. Nancy Jane Benson, 1782-aft 1870

Levin's second (or third wife by some trees) was Rebecca Brummell. They married about 1785 in Rowan County, North Carolina. Rebecca survived Levin and died on 16 October 1850 in Henderson County, Tennessee.[2] Children of Levin and Rebecca Brummell include:

  2. John Benson, 1790-1814
  3. George Benson, 1797-bef 1850
  4. Elam Levin "Lum" Benson, Jr., 1798-1875

Revolutionary War Service

Levin served in the Delaware Line as a Private in the Revolutionary War. He was awarded a pension for that service.[3]

Pension awarded Lincoln County, Tennessee, 22 May 1833; commencement of pension, 4 march 1831. Annual allowance $80, sums received as of 1835, $240. Age given as 83. Description of service - Private, Delaware line.[4] Transferred to Pulaski County, Tennessee following pension payment March 1836. Payments were made twice a year in March and September. Levin died in June 1836 and was paid for the first quarter of that pay period.[1]
