Biography

Sarah was born about 1844 in Lincoln County, Tennessee. She is the daughter of William Benson and Emeranda Holloway. She passed away in March 1926 in Kelso, Lincoln County, Tennessee[1] and is buried in Campbell Cemetery, Howell Hill, Lincoln County.[2]

There is a discrepancy between the birth year of 1836 on the Find A Grave Memorial and the census records for 1850-1870; they all give a birth year of 1843/44. There is also an error for the year of death. Sarah's death certificate shows death in 1926, memorial has 1916. A correction has been submitted to Find A Grave. Sarah and son Horace are living in Lincoln County, Tennessee on the 1880 census with her sister Mary E (Benson) Echols.[3]

So far she has not been located on census records for 1900-1920.

Marriage

Sarah Benson married David A McCulloch on 25 June 1879 in Lincoln County, Tennessee.[4] Marriage license issued 24 June 1879, Lincoln County.[5] Of the three Sarah Bensons married in the 1870s in Lincoln County, Tennessee, this appears to be the Sarah profiled here, daughter of William Benson and Emeranda Holloway.

Sarah and David had one son Horace McCulloch born in 1879. And they apparently separated shortly thereafter. On the 1880 census Sarah MuCulluck and son Horace are living with her brother-in-law and sister Reuben and Mary E (Benson) Echols in Lincoln County, Tennessee. [6] Husband David McCullock is living some distance away in the household of Nancy Martin and working as a farm laborer.[7]
