Stephen Bent was born in Ireland.

Stephen Bent (1852-1906) was born in Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford, Ireland on the 25th December 1852 ^{[1] [2]} and christened in Wexford parish the next day. ^[1] He was the son of Thomas Bent and Mary Kehoe. ^[1]

Within a few years the family had relocated to Liverpool and in the 1861 census they were recorded on Sparling Street, Liverpool (as Bennet) ^[3] By 1871 he was working as a dock labourer and the family had moved to Mann Street in Toxteth Park. ^[4]

He married Ellen Lawrence Wilson at St Peter's church, Liverpool on the 3rd January 1873 at that time giving his occupation as an engine driver. ^{[5] [6]}

They settled in Toxteth Park and started their family later that year ^[7] but their first 3 children died in infancy. By 1881 they had moved to Mill Street and Stephen was working in an iron foundry. They had 2 daughters living at that time. ^[8]
With their family growing they moved to Northumberland Street before 1887 ^[9] and in the 1891 census, Stephen was shown as an iron dresser* and his 5 surviving children were all present at the Northumberland Street address. His widowed father and brother also lived with them. ^[10] He must have been hospitalised around that time as he was also shown as a patient in Liverpool Royal Infirmary on the 1891 census returns. ^[2]

Shortly afterwards they moved to Park Street, Toxteth Park ^[11] and it was here they completed their family in 1895 with Nathaniel. ^[12] but moved to Mill Street before 1900 when Ellen died there ^[13]
In the 1901 census a widowed Stephen, still an iron dresser, was there with 6 of his children. They also shared the house with 2 other families. ^[14]

He married a widow Emma Hughes (nee Knox) later that year on the 5th November 1901 at St James' church in Toxteth Park. ^{[15] [16]} They did not have any children.

He moved back to Park Street, Toxteth Park and on 15th February 1906 he was admitted to the infirmary of Toxteth Park Workhouse with pneumonia. He was described as a 55 year old iron dresser, married to Emma, both of 25 Park Street. ^[17] He died 4 days later on the 19th February 1906 ^{[17] [18]} and was buried in Yew Tree Cemetery, West Derby, Liverpool on the 24th February 1906. ^[19]
