Biography

Birth

According to a Municipal Census of Delft, Willem Bentinck tot Nijenhuis was born on 26 Oct 1795, in Wijhe, Overijssel, Netherlands, to Adolf Carel Bentinck, and Maria Francoise von Aerssen Beijeren [1]

Marriage and Children

He married Sophia Margaretha Verspijck on 8 Apr 1829, in Breda, Noord-Brabant, Nederland. [2]The record of marriage confirms Willem's parents, and Sophia Margaretha's parents are also named. They had 2 children.

Sophia Margaretha passed away when she was only 37, on 16 Nov 1841, in Dordrecht, South Holland, Netherlands.[5]

Willem passed away at the age of 65, on 22 Jan 1861, in Arnhem, Gelderland, Nederland. He held the rank of Kolonel on his death. [6]

Military Career and Decorations

Willem's career began in France. In October of 1813, Willem Bentinck enrolled at the military school St. Cyr, and he was there for just over 9 months. After this he joined with the Dutch Army, and in July of 1814 he was promote to 2nd Lieutenant of the 2nd Battalion of the Standing Army. In April 1815 he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant.

Served with Foot Artillery Battery ‘Lux’ during the Waterloo campaign; Transferred to the horse artillery before 1830.[7]

Willem received 833 francs (393 guilders) as a gratuity for his service at Waterloo (see image). [8]

He remained a lieutenant for 9 years. In July of 1824 he was promoted to 2nd Captain of the Horse Artillery Corps, and 2 years later (Dec 1826) he was promoted to Captain.

He was also present with the mobile army at the Belgian Revolutions from 1830 to 1834.

On the 25th of August, 1831, Willem received the Militaire Willems-Orde, 4th Class. [9]

He also received the Metal Cross (Metal Kruis) on the 13th of July, 1832.

Willem was appointed Major of the 3rd Artillery Regiment on the 22nd of March, 1841, and by Royal Decree he was appointed Lieutenant-Colonel on the 10th of September, 1844.

In December of 1844 he received an award for long service.

He later transferred to the 1st Fortress Artillery (Vestingartillerie) Regiment.

On the 30th of April, 1849, he was appointed "buitengewoon Kamerheer", which translates to "extraordinary chamberlain" - this means he was a manager of the King's household and obviously singled out for his service.

On the 10th of May, 1849, he was awarded the Order of the Dutch Lion, degree Knight. [10]


By the 10th of September, 1852, he was Colonel and Commander of the 1st Fortress Artillery Regiment.

Willem recieved a pension on the 18th of November, 1854, after over 40 years in the military.
