Benjamin Bentley Sr. was born in 1747 in Lincoln, North Carolina, his father, Thomas, was 22 and his mother, Hannah, was 33. He married Jane Holman in 1764 in his hometown. They had nine children in 16 years. He died on March 15, 1839, in Wilkes, North Carolina, at the impressive age of 92.

Benjamin along with his father Thomas are listed on the 1768 tax list for Rowan County (Davie County area), North Carolina.[1] [2] [3]

The 1778 Rowan County tax lists include the names "Thomas Bentley junr." and Benjamin Bentley, living in Captn Lyon's District (Davies County after 1837) and shows Benjamin's value to be 336 pounds [4]

Benjamin Bentley died before March 15, 1839, reflected in records of an estate sale held by his son Squire Bentley. The record consists of a list of names and the items bought. The list mentions Benjamin's widow as one of the purchasers, meaning she was still alive in 1839.[5]

Miller's bio info for Benjamin b. 1746-46 Frederick Co., Maryland, died before 15 March 1839 Wilkes Co., NC, married ca 1765 Jane (Holman?) b. 1750 d. Wilkes Co., NC.

[James Miller's site] about Benjamin and the Bentley House provides the following (trying to find orig sources)

  • Benjamin Bentley was appointed Constable of the "lower end of the forks of the Yadkin" from 16 February 1771 to 7 February 1772 by the Sheriff of Rowan County.
  • The 1778 tax list of Capt. Lyon's district in Rowan County and that of his father, Thomas, to 609 pounds.
  • Benjamin Bentley Sr.'s age was given in the 1830 Iredell Co., NC, census as age 80-90, thus he would have been born between the years of 1741 and 1750. His birthplace would have been in the Frederick Co., MD, area since his parents were living in that area at the time.
  • Benjamin Bentley's wife's name was Jane. It is probable she was a Holman.
    • In an undated letter to his son written in the 1920's or 1930's, John J. Bentley of Wilkes County. NC., wrote his family history to the best of his knowledge. The letter was for his son, Dr. James Gordon "J.G." Bentley of Wilkes County. John J. Bentley was born 25 December 1844. John's great grandfather, Benjamin Bentley, died 1839 in Wilkes County, NC.
      • The letter begins "Dr. Bentley, Dear son, as near as I can remember I give the following as family history. The Bentleys came to US before the Revolutionary War from England. Your Great Great Grandfather was Benjamin Bentley his wife a Holman....."

James Miller's Notes on some of the purchasers at Bejaman's estate sale:

  • Widow was Jane (Holman?) Bentley
  • Elizabeth Bentley was Benjamin and Jane's daughter-in-law, she being Elizabeth Laws before marrying James Bentley 25 Feb 1804 in Wilkes County NC. She filed for divorce against James Bentley in 1837 naming Sarah Fletcher as the reason and that he had taken up with her and fathered a couple children by her. Divorce granted in 1841 Wilkes Co NC.
  • Joseph Campbell was Ben and Jane's son-in-law, he having married Catherine Bentley,
  • Bentley Harrison was Ben and Jane's grandson, son of Joseph and Drusilla (Bentley) Harrison.
  • Joseph Bentley was Ben and Jane's grandson, son of Moses and Mary Bentley. Joseph is buried in Bentley Cemetery west of Barrett Mountain in Alexander Co., NC.
  • William Bentley, was a grandson of Ben and Jane Bentley; he either being the son of Squire and Sarah (Hines) Bentley, born in 1814; or the son of James and Elizabeth (Laws) Bentley, born in 1823. I tend to think it was William, born in 1814, as he would have been older at the time of the sale in 1839.
  • William Hines was a son-in-law of Ben and Jane Bentley, he having married their daughter Mary Bentley on 23 Sept 1797 in Iredell Co. NC. Both William and Mary are buried in Hines Cemetery, Alexander Co., NC.
