Emily was born in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England, on November 7, 1852. She was the daughter of John Bentley and Harriet Carver. Her father passed away in 1858. Emily was enumerated in the 1861 census residing with her mother, three siblings, and two cousins at 66 West Parade Street, Huddersfield.
Emily married Thomas Stowell Clapham on April 5, 1903, in Moldgreen ( a district in Huddersfield), at Christ Church. According to the Parish Register, Emily was a fifty year old spinster residing at Westfield House, Moldgreen. Her father was named as Joseph Bentley (deceased) "Merchant". Thomas was a fifty four year old widower and "Iron Founder" residing on Devonshire Street, Keighley. His father was named as William Clapham "Iron Founder. The witnesses were J.P. Bentley and W.H. Clapham. Emily and Thomas appear in the 1911 census residing at Laurel Grove, Keighley. Thomas' son, Frederick, and one servant also at residence.
Emily passed away on October 12, 1916. She was buried in Utley Cemetery, Keighley. Her Probate was administered on November 16, 1916, in Wakefield, naming Joseph Edwin Bentley "Dyer" as beneficiary.
