William Bentley was baptized 3 December 1810 at Pateley Bridge, Yorkshire, England.[1]
In the 1851 Census, William Bentley was recorded as head of a household in Street Lane, Pateley Bridge, Yorkshire (West Riding), England. He was 40 years old and a "farmers laborer," born in York at Middletowne. Others in his household were his wife Hannah, age 47, born in York at Bale Bank; and four children, all born in York at Bridgehousegate:[2]
Mary Ann Bentley, age 17, flax spinner
Jane Bentley, age 15, flax spinner
William Bentley, age 12, scholar
Grace Bentley, age 5, scholar.
Francis Joy, age 22, described as "son in law" also resided in the household. He was born in York at Bridgehousegate and worked as a flag facer (stone mason).
In the 1881 Census, he was recorded as 73 years old, a carter by occupation, and head of a household at Street Lane, Bewerley, Yorkshire, England. Others in the household were wife Hannah, age 77; daughters Mary Ann Pounder, age 46 and a "lead miner's wife," and Grace Lofthouse, age 33; and grandson Fred Lofthouse, 7 months old. All were recorded as born at Bewerley, Yorkshire, except for Fred, whose birthplace was Otley, Yorkshire.[3]

Is William your ancestor? Please don't go away! Login to collaborate or comment, or contact

Could you reconsider this please? Both profiles refer to the same entry in the 1851 census, which gives his age as 40, so a birth date of "about 1808" doesn't seem too far out. The birth date on Bentley-471 is incorrect, it can't be 3 Dec 1810 as that is his date of baptism . As the baptism record relates to Pateley Bridge, I assume that the birth place of "Middletongue" relates to the place of that name about a mile to the southwest of Pateley Bridge. If so, then Bewerley lies midway between the two. So although the birth dates on the two profiles are different, they are consistent with this being the same person.
The birthdate on the profile for daughter Mary Ann doesn't accord with the ages for her in the census records.
As for the two children with the LNAB of Joy (Joy-379 and Joy-372 -- both now have been disconnected from William Bentley as father), my guess is that Hannah was previously married to a man named Joy (i.e., Joy wasn't her LNAB) and these were her children from that earlier marriage. It's also possible that they were born out of wedlock before she was married. Either way, the identification of Francis Joy as "son in law" in the 1851 census is consistent with Francis being Hannah's son but not also William's son. ("Son in law" could mean stepson.)
I never got past trying to figure out if this is William Bentley taking his mom's LNAB or should Ingilby from his dad be used or am I missing something? Thanks for giving him a Bio and helping figure out Nancy's bio at the same time.
ps I noticed two of his kid's have his wife's LNAB. Almost as if its a family tradition.

I'll resubmit the merge request.
