William Bentley was born circa 1753, the son of John Bentley & Christian Hammock. William died in 1792.
My brother Bruce thru Sam b1719 just took the Y-DNA test and Matches Mark E Bentley thru Isaac B/o Charotte C/o James B bc1749 of Wilkes Co GA and matches AB’s grandson bc1930 S/o Horace all descendant’s of Lewis B named in his father William’s 1791 will. It is now fairly apparent that this William is the PROVED S/o John and Christian Hammock Bentley as opposed to John’s PROVED brother William b1721. George F. Bentley

Research Notes
FamilySearch: North Carolina Taxation
Tax records have been kept consistently in North Carolina from colonial times. Generally, two types of taxes were used: taxes on people, known as poll or capitation tax, and taxes on property. Tax lists from the mid-eighteenth century to the 1900s exist for many counties and have been microfilmed. Copies are at the North Carolina State Archives and at the Family History Library. They include poll tax records, railroad tax books, taxable land lists, personal property tax lists, and records of delinquent taxes.
Until 1777 the poll tax was used almost exclusively, and it was used consistently until 1970. Over the years laws have changed the definition of who would be counted in the taxing. For example, the age at which men no longer had to pay taxes varied in different time periods, and during some periods new residents of the state were exempt from being taxed. In 1715 North Carolina began collecting taxes from the head of the household for all free males aged 16 or over and all slaves aged 12 or over. In 1835 the ages were changed to 21 to 45 for free males and 12 to 50 for slaves. Some early lists name each taxable person, so you may find a listing for both a father and his sons. Later lists generally give only the name of the head of a household and the number of additional taxable persons in the home.

District G -- This area included: The town of Leatherville, Lloyds Creek, Dozier Creek, Gray's Creek in the southwest corner of what is now Lincoln County.
District GG -- This area is now in the eastern part of Greene County, near the border with what remains as Wilkes County.
District H -- This area included Upton's Creek and Kemp's Creek in what is now the southeast corner of Wilkes County. "The tax returns for this district for 1790 have not been found . . . " except for seven defaulters." Except for these few defaulters, all persons included in this census are noted as being residents of this district in 1787 or 1791 or both."
District I -- This area is just west of District H in southern Wilkes County between Rocky Creek and Upton's Creek.
Note A - The tax returns for the district in which this taxpayer probably resided in 1790 are missing, so there is no tax record to show that he actually was a resident. However, the taxpayer is recorded for both the indicated district, or the 1787 district from which the indicated district was made, and for the indicated district in 1791 or a district made therefrom. Accordingly, it is almost certain the taxpayer did reside in the indicated district in 1790.
Note C - The tax returns for the district in which this taxpayer probably resided in 1790 are missing, so there is no tax record to show that he actually was there. However, this taxpayer is recorded for 1791 in the indicated district or a district made therefrom. Consequently, it is highly probable the taxpayer did reside in the indicated district in 1790.
See note C above for William BENTLEY Jr. His land was located between Upton's Creek and Kemp's Creek and remains today part of southeastern Wilkes County.
NOTE from George F Bentley
Benedict Hammock cited above has a proved connection to the William Bentley who in 1791 writes his will and then dies in Wilkes County. Benedict's proven sister Christian married John Bentley b.c.1715 Richmond County, Virginia, the older brother of William b.1721. John and Christian have a proved son named William bc1750 in Virginia.
There is a possibility that this William Bentley is the husband of Jane Hammond m Bentley — married 8 Oct 1774 in Onslow NC. THERE IS NO PROOF.
I have corrected his age to bc1751 based on his apparent older brother James's age which I have also corrected to bc1749
This William is noted in Onslow NC 1769 and 1770. Based on his age he cannot be the William in New Hanover 1763. [ Age corrections based on the 1767 Spicer will naming his proved brother James - combined with his brother's1783 pleading referring to his own age!]
This is the William below S/o John Onslow NC 1769 and 1770

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
Y-chromosome DNA test-takers in his direct paternal line on WikiTree:
(a) Chloe is the sister of "Will" Bentley, d.1792, and they are both children of John & Christian.
(b) Chloe is the daughter of John's youngest brother William, which makes Chloe and "Will" first cousins.
I am leaning toward the latter if for no other reason than it is consistent with the belief that Chloe's father was Captain William Bentley.
Lieutenant John Bentley, Georgia Militia, was killed in a 1779 skirmish with Indian allies of the British Army. This presumably explains how
Christian acquired a Georgia Land Headright. According to this version of the facts, if (a) is true then Chloe's father was Lieutenant John Bentley just prior to his death in 1779.
My interest in this is trying to prove (or disprove) the Bentley relationship between Chloe Bentley m Holmes and the William Bentley who leaves the 1791 will in Wilkes Co GA - who is DNA proved to be of the SE VA Bentley family.
All, Please note that there are 3 different identified adult "William" Bentleys proved in circa 1780 Wilkes Co GA. At lease 2 served in the Rev War and could have been all 3! The father of Chloe Bentley is PROVED "Capt. Bentley" - NOT: "Capt. William Bentley" - DAR: "first name thought to be William".
Through an Oklahoma descendant of his son Lewis, the William Bentley of Wilkes Co GA who left the 1791 will is DNA Proved a descendant of the Daniel Bentley who died about 1723 in Richmond County Virginia and was married to Ann Last Name Unknown.
Therefore he CANNOT be a decendant of the Bertie NC Bentley different DNA family.
