Biography

William was born in 1853 in Kentucky. He was the son of Squire Bentley and Mary "Polly" Holbrook. [1]

The 1860 Census[2] shows him at age 6 in the home of his father and step mother in Letcher County, Kentucky.

The 1870 Census[3] shows him at age 15 in the home of his father and step mother in Letcher County, Kentucky.

He married Susannah Quillen about 1873. Their children:

  1. William D. Bentley (1874–1881)
  2. Mary Polly Bentley (1876–Deceased)
  3. Arminda C "Mindy" Bentley (1878–Deceased)
  4. Squire Richard Bentley (1879–1933)
  5. Benjamin Franklin Bentley (1882–1960)
  6. James M. Bentley (1887-1965)
  7. Wiley A. Bentley (1891–Deceased)
  8. Nancy Jane Bentley (1895–1915)
  9. Sarah E. Bentley (1898–1924)
  10. Ira J. Bentley (1902–1971)

The 1880 Census[4] shows him at age 25 with his wife and three children in Letcher County, Kentucky.

The 1900 Census[5] shows him at age 51 with his wife, ten children and two grandchildren, in Magisterial District 2, Millstone, Letcher County, Kentucky. This census states that his wife has born 10 children with 8 still living.

The 1910 Census[6] shows him at age 58 with his wife and five children in Millstone, Letcher County, Kentucky. This census states that his wife has born 11 children with 8 still living.

He passed away in 1919, [7] [8] and is buried at the Bentley Cemetery in Letitia, Greenup County, Kentucky[9]
