Biography

William Bentley was born in England, in 1588 (place and parents unsure) based upon passenger list of the Truelove from 1635.

It is likely that this is the William Bentley who "was a passenger to Boston, Massachusetts in 1635, aged 47 years, on the ship Truelove. He arrived with John Bentley, aged 17 years (b.1618) and Alice Bentley aged 15 years (b.1620), perhaps his children. This William if age 47 in 1635 would have been born in 1588. [1]

According to Robert Charles Anderson, "This family does not appear in New England records. Savage thought he resided at Boston, but this is probably a confusion with WILLIAM BEAMSLEY, whose record of freemanship calls him Will: Benseley. [2]

The First Settlers of New England by James Savage has the following entry,

"Bentley, John, Charlestown, 'perhaps son of William', died 20 Nov. 1690. Bentley, Richard, Charlestown, in 1690 had wife Margaret. Bentley, William, a passenger to Boston, 1635, aged 47, i n the "Truelove", with John, 17, and Alice, 15, perhaps his children, but where he pitched his tent , is unknown to me, as also is anything about Mary, a passenger the same year in the "Defense", aged 20 (born 1615). Bentley is a parish in the denery of Doncaster, and south p art of Yorkshire (England)".[3]

In addition to showing William arrived on the Truelove in 1635, it also suggests John of Charleston was "perhaps a son of William". The Richard mentioned is not tied to William or John at this time.

Mrs Helen Stone Woodruff states,

"Bentley, William, born about 1588 in England. He was a sturdy exponent of the "New Light" Baptist Faith and was active in establishing this faith along the East Coast. There is little doubt that he was the ancestor of the many Bentley names on Baptist Registers throughout the United States , He was married to a Mary in England, and although I could find no record of her arrival in America, it appears she was in Boston with him.[4]

She then concludes with a statement speculating that William's father might have been the "William Bentley who died In Kingston, Rhode Island in 1691 he would have been about 103 years old at his death." However, the William Bentley who died in RI is 1691 is NOT believed to be this William's father. Mrs Woodruff's statement has led to confusion not only about William's father but his children as well.

Research Notes

See information about the other Williams of this time here

When current PM took over profile,William's father was listed as James Bentley, the father son relationship will be removed until a source is found regarding William's parents.

Further research is needed to locate John (born in approximately 1618) who traveled with William and Alice. The above sources show John was a son of William. John Bentley seems most likely.

The William of this profile would have been 88 in 1675. So it is unlikely he is the William Bentley reported on some sights to be with Capt. Daniel Henchman in 1675.

Further information is need regarding William death date. 1663 in Kingston, Wash, Rhode Island, US needs a source.

PGM project box on children John Bentley and Alice Bentley. done

I did not do a rewrite or clarification on John. Not sure how to handle that.

There are many persons listed by Anderson who had no known existence in America. But since he's listed he should be PGM as well as the alleged children. He has no further connections and the profile is fairly clear about the no records in New England. John and Alice also have no connections and should be marked PGM, although I think John needs a rewrite or clarification. Anyway I think that the profile should be ppp for the reason Cheryl stated.

To clarify in my own mind, I reread Andrson on William Bentley.

https://www.americanancestors.org/databases/great-migration-immigrants-to-new-england-1634-1635-volume-i-a-b/image?volumeId=7051&pageName=261&rId=235167011 My interpretation of Anderson would be that the only records found in New England are actually for William Beamsley, not William Bentley.

But there's also the comment about Anderson's point that there's no evidence of this family in New England. I'm confused...

since there is so much confusion & speculation surrounding this profile, I believe it should be PPPd.

See paragraph just prior to research notes..."speculating that William's father may have been..." Also that Savage confused him with William Beamsley.
