Speculation about this William Bentley and many other Bentley family "legends" purport to lead back to James Bentley, Capt. of Horse of the Royal Stuart Army. James was captured by Cromwell and placed in Pontefract Castle were he died. See Bentley Name Study for more information on Bentley History.

William Bentley and Mary Goodwin were married, in 1601, at St. Paul's Church, in Bedford. Mary's will, dated June 27, 1632, lists Mary as a widow. Meaning William died prior to this date. Mary's will names six children John, Margaret, Rose, Elizabeth, Anie and Mary [1].

Records in the Befordshire County Council office list seven children John, Margaret, Rose, Elizabeth, Emma, Mary, and Thomas.[2]

Anie and Emma could possibly be the same person.

additional notes about children

There is no documentation that William and Mary had a daughter named Alse. However, there was an Alice listed as being aboard the Truelove with William. Therefore, she is likely his daughter.

William Bentley who "was a passenger to Boston, Massachusetts in 1635, aged 47 years, on the ship Truelove and that he arrived with
John Bentley, aged 17 years (born in approximately 1618)
Alice Bentley aged 15 years (born in approximately 1620)

The Alse originally listed as a daughter, of the this William is likely the daughter of William so her profile is no longer attached to this William.

I noticed you are the profile manager for the 2 Mary Goodwins you have listed as his wife. Do you have information suggesting they shouldn't be merged?
