Biography

There were two Ruth Bentons born in Tolland, Connecticut at about the same time and listed in the town records:

  • Ruth the daughter of William Benton and Sarah Tyler born December 3, 1756.
  • Ruth the daughter of Josiah and Ruth b. April 15, 1756.

One of the Ruth Bentons married Joseph Kingsbury of Coventry (now Andover), Connecticut.

This profile is for Ruth, the daughter of William and Sarah.

A sister of Ruth, Abigail Benton married Roswell Wright. Sophia Kingsbury, who was Ruth's daughter, and Polly Wright, Abigail's step-daughter, wrote "Dear Cousin" letters. These letters seem to acknowledge the relationship between Ruth and Abigail as both daughters of William and Sarah (Tyler) Benton.

More evidence in the old family papers is correspondence between "Uncle Roswell Wright" and "Eber" Carpenter, who apparently was a son or grandson of Sarah, through her daughter Anna Burroughs Carpenter.

Finally, Polly Wright married step-cousin Harvey Kingsbury.[1]
