John Benton was born in South Carolina in about 1791.[1] John moved to Georgia and lived in Coweta County sometime between 1830 and 1850[2] and then moved to Wood Co., Texas,[3] where he died around 1870. John traveled west from South Carolina and first stopped in Fayette County, Ga., where he lived for a short time before moving on to Coweta County. Mary died prior to 1849, and John remarried to Elizabeth Fulmer on 10 Dec 1844.[4][5][6]
Excerpt from Coweta County Chronicles:
"Captain John Benton came early. He had lived in Fayette several years, deciding to move to Coweta, he came and cut the logs to build his house, but had to go back to Fayette to bring men to help him raise it, there were so few living in what is now Coweta county. His settlement was on White Oak Creek. The Fayette men liked the country so much that several moved over, among others Joel Johnson and Mrs. Hannah Roberts. Benjamin Hughes was another early settler from South Carolina. He was a soldier of the Revolutionary war, and father-in-law of John Benton, who was a soldier in the War of 1812, and a member of the legislature."[7]
John Benton is listed as one of the earliest settlers in Coweta County, 2nd District. As well as his son Joshua Hugh Benton, who remained in Coweta after his father moved back to Texas.[8][1]
John Benton was a State Representative for Coweta County, Ga. in 1837, also in 1843.[8][9]
John Benton also served on the Grand Jury for Coweta County in 1832.[10]
Research Notes
Incomplete; will add additional sources.
John and his second wife, Elizabeth, had a son named William Franklin Benton.[11]
There is a Pvt. John Benton who served in the Indian Wars with Coleman's Company, 1 Georgia Drafted Militia. I haven't been able to determine if it is this John Benton though.
This John Benton is mentioned here in relation to his son, Jacob, serving in the Indian Wars.
Based on a War of 1812 Pension Application file, I believe the 1849 marriage previously mentioned in the biography was that of a different John Benton - John P. Benton - who married a Sarah Lac(e)y on 24 Oct 1849 in Pike County, GA.
