Biography
Clara, daughter of Charles Corydon Benton and Belinda Sarah Cowles, was born 12 November 1847 in Lee, Berkshire, Massachusetts.[1][2] She grew up in Lee, where in 1855 her father was a paper manufacturer.[3] At that time the household consisted of her parents Charles C. (age 30) and Belinda S. (28), Clara A. (7), and her siblings Mary E. (9) and George L. (3).[3] The 1865 census seems to indicate that her brother died—the would be 13-year-old is absent from the record. Living together in Lee were Charles C. (age 43, paper maker), Belinda S. (40, laborer) and Clara A. (17).[4]
On 13 June 1866 at the Methodist Episcopal church in Lee, she married Charles Holmes Groesbeck, a paper-maker and the son of Alexander McCoy Groesbeck and Emeline Holmes.[1] Together they had two daughters:
Emma L. Groesbeck (b. 29 July 1868;[5] m. John Henry Neumeister;[6] d. unknown). Children: Gertrude Emeline,[7] Lela May,[8] Charles John[9] and Zenas Franklin Neumeister.[10]
Grace A. Groesbeck (b. 17 November 1870;[11] m. Willis Casper Flansburgh.[12][13] d. February 1921).[14] Two daughters: Clara Julianna[15][2] and Miriam Flansburgh.[16]
By 1880 Charles (age 33) and Clara (32) are living in Dalton, Berkshire, Massachusetts, with their two daughters: Emma L. (11) and Grace A. (9).[17] Her husband was a finishman in the paper mill. Grace married in 1889[12] and established her own household.
Charles (age 54, paper-mill foreman) and Clara (53) remained in Dalton, where 20 years later the household included their daughter Emma (32) and her husband John H. Neumeister (37, paper-mill calender) and granddaughters Gertrude E. (6) and Lela M. Neumeister (4).[18] This much of the family remained together in 1910—and grew in size. In addition to Charles (age 63, paper-mill foreman) and Clara A. Groesbeck (62), John H. (46, paper finisher) and Emma L. Neumeister (41) were added two grandsons to include children: Gertrude E. (15), Lela M. (14), Charles J. (9) and Lenas F. Neumeister (4).[19]
Clara died 1 December 1916 in Dalton from a cerebral thrombosis[2] and was buried there in the Main Street Cemetery.[20][2]
