MALONE — Richard J. Benware, 86, of Malone, N.Y., died Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 3, 2012, at the Franklin County Nursing home with his loving wife and family at his side. He had been a resident there since Nov. 28, 2011.

Born in Piercefield, N.Y., Feb. 15, 1925, he was the son of the late Ernest and Lillian Staie Benware. He attended Potsdam public schools. In 2000, he received his Honorary High School Diploma from Potsdam Central School.

From 1943-45, he served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater, where he was wounded in action and received the Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged.

On May 10, 1947, he was united in marriage to the former Eleanor G. Johnson at St. Joseph's Church in Malone. She survives.

Richard was employed by ALCOA in Massena, N.Y., for more than 40 years. He retired in 1988.

He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church. He was a member of the Malone American Legion, ALCOA Twenty-Five Year Club and a past member of the Potsdam Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was an avid bowler and enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking and furniture making. Richard was a blood donor for many years.

Along with his wife, Eleanor, he is survived by four sons and daughters-in-laws, Gary and Cathy Benware of Malone, Gerald and Barbara Benware of Louisville, Ky., Daniel Benware and Barbara Winthrop-Benware of North Bangor and Steven and Julie Benware of Columbus, Ohio; one sister and a brother-in-law, Hilda and Earl Brown of Boonville, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by one brother, Kenneth Benware; two sisters, Verna Tjaden and Lena Benware and one great-granddaughter, Olivia Robinson.

Calling hours will be from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday at the Bruso-Desnoyers Funeral Home in Malone. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Church in Malone. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery on Lake Titus Road in Malone.

Donations may be made in his memory to the Benware-Benoit Foundation.

The family would like to express its gratitude for the loving care provided by the Farrar Home and the Franklin County Nursing Home.
