Biography

Christina Catherina BENZING was baptized in St. Johns Evangelical Church, Buffalo, on 14 Jun 1869. Her parents are listed as Johann & Friedericke Benzing. Sponsors are listed as Jacob Benzing, Franz Baer, and Christine Benzing.

Catherine's common name was Katie or Kate. Catherine BENZING married Morton C. Hutchinson on 12 Dec 1900, in Buffalo, Erie Co., New York, where her parents resided. Morton Hutchinson was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth MORTON Hutchinson. Catherine was 22 years old at the time of her marriage and Morton was 23 years old. Catherine gave birth to at least 4 children, named Harold, Edith, Thomas, and George Hutchinson.

Catherine and Morton operated a farm in Lancaster, Erie County for the majority of their adult lives. In the 1910 Federal census, the 1915 NYS census, and the 1920 Federal census of Lancaster, Catherine and Morton are enumerated with all four children in their household.

Catherine's husband died in 1930, aged 62 years.

Catherine is enumerated in the 1940 census of Lancaster, on Stoney Road. She is widowed and has no occupation. Residing in her household are son Thomas, son Harold, daughter-in-law Elinor, and grandson Harold. The 1940 census data indicates Catherine had four years of education.

Catherine died aged 81 years.

[Amherst Bee, 20 April, 1950] "Mrs. C. Hutchinson's Funeral Is Today Mrs. Catherine Hutchinson, 81, wife of the late Morton C. Hutchinson, died in Buffalo on Monday, April 17, 1950, following an extended illness. The family formerly lived on Stoney Road, Clarence. Funeral services are being conducted from the home of her son George, 4925 South Transit Rd., Lancaster, N.Y., this afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. Carl Miller of Lancaster will officiate. Interment will be in Harris Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Hutchinson was the mother of Harold J., Thomas M., George M., and the late Edith C. Hutchinson."
