John was born in 1890 in London in Middlesex, Ontario, Canada, the first-born and son of Benjamin Bere and Margaret Helena Cohoon. He lived his life in London, working initially as a bookkeeper and later running his own grocery store. In 1917 at age 26, he married Alma Bell Nixon in St. Thomas, Ontario. They had two children together, the first of whom died in infancy. He died of coronary thrombosis in 1944 and is buried with his wife in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in London, Ontario.
