Biography

Research Note: There are two pairs of parents for Emil. Andrew and Christine Berg mentioned in the obituary displayed on his Find-a-Grave site[1] and Leander Mattsson and Anna Kristina Jakobsdotter as recorded on his birth recorded in Finland[2], It seems to me that the Finish record is correct and so I am creating them as parents.
There is no record that the family used the name Berg in Finland and on the Ellis Island site all such immigrants from Jeppo, Finland use the last name Slangar. I believe the LNAB should be Slangar. The immigrants probably thought Berg was an easier last name to use.

Emil Andrew Berg was born April 7, 1895 in Joppa, Finland to parents Andrew and Christine Berg. The name of the town could have been "Jeppua" or "Jeppo" in Swedish based on birth records.[3][1]

Residence

1895 - 1911
Slangar, Lassila No.1, Jeppo, Vaasa, Finland [4][5][6]

He was married to Olena (Oline, Lena) Larson, daughter of Jacob Larson and Petrena (Molstad) Larson on October 14, 1919 in Shevlin, Minnesota. She died in 1967.[1]

The couple lived in Bemidji, MN for a few years then moved to their farm in Copley Township in 1928.[1]

Emil was a veteran of World War I and a 50-year member of the American Legion. He worked on boats on the Great Lakes for 32 years.[1]

They had two children:[1]

  1. Pauline (Mrs. Joe Balik)
  2. Joseph who lived in Manitowoc, Wisconsin.

He had a brother, Hugo Berg, who lived in Tacoma, Washington.[1]

Emil died on June 9, 1968 at Veteran's Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota and was buried at Bagley City Cemetery, Bagley, Clearwater, Minnesota.[1]
