  • DESCENDANTS OF PHILIP BERGER/BARGER OF CENTRAL PENNSYLVANIA

COMPILED BY MARY F. MICKEY, 64 N. SPROUL ROAD, BROOMALL, PA 19008 Following is the general information known about PHILIP Berger/Barger and his wife, CHRISTIANA. Philip was born about 1765. Christiana was born in 1766. It is not known where either of them were born, but the family is said to have originated in Hannover, Germany The first information we find on them is in the first Federal Census taken in 1790. At that time Philip was living in Tulpehocken Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania with his wife and son. Unfortunately, the census records give only the name of the head of the household until 1850. For at least the next five years, Philip and his family were in Berks County. His wife's name (Christiana) is shown on the baptismal records of their two children who were born during this period. By 1799, Philip and Christiana were in New Berlin, East Buffalo Township, which at that time was part of Northumberland County. Northumberland County was divided up several times after 1800 and New Berlin is located in what is now Union County. Union and Centre Counties, and the town of New Berlin in particular, were, for many years, the central point of the manufacture of wellknown red clay pottery and the man who started it all was -- Philip Berger. Philip was still in New Berlin in 1810 according to the census, but in the years between 1800 and 1810, he acquired land in both Haines and Potter Townships, Centre County and had one child baptized in Aaronsburg which is in Haines Township, Centre County. By 1811, Philip had acquired land in Mifflin County and appears on the tax records there in Armagh Township for the next 19 years. However, he was actually living in Union Township for a number of years. In 1820, Philip, Christiana and family were residing in Derry Township, Mifflin County, but in 1830 their residence is shown as Armagh Township. It is not known exactly when Philip or Christiana died. Philip was still living as of 27 February, 1840 when he deeded some land to his youngest child as that child's share. In 1840 Philip would have been about 75 years old. However, he is not on the 1840 Census which was taken during the summer, so he must have died between March and June. Christiana lived at least another 10 years, since she was living with her youngest child, Jacob, in 1850. Her age is shown as 84. She was 47 years old when Jacob was born.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Philip by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Philip:

You only list one child Philip who fits my file. I will improve his profile and then continue to add the other children as I have time to improve my skimpy data. Hope you are OK with this.

Mary
