Biography

JEAN BAPTISTE BERGERON is on the Wall of Names at the Acadian Memorial in St. Martinville, Louisiana, on Plaque 1 Right. Listed with him is his wife, Catherine Caissy, and seven children: Madeleine, Osite, Jean Baptiste, Charles, Marianne and Joseph.[1][2]

Charles Bergeron was born to Jean Baptiste Bergeron and Catherine dit Roger Caissy around 1756.[3] This was shortly after the beginning of Le Grand Dérangement aka "The Great Upheaval" (the deportation and imprisonment of the Acadians from Nova Scotia). Le Grand Dérangement was when the Acadians were ordered "That your Land & Tennements, Cattle of all Kinds and Livestocks of all Sorts are forfeited to the Crown with all other your effects savings your money and Household Goods, and you yourselves to be removed from this Province.” [4]

His Early Life

To follow his early life, one must follow his parents. At the end of the Seven Years War between England and France, Charles' great uncle, Augustin and his father, Jean (Baptiste) were on the list of prisoners at Halifax on the date August 12, 1763.[5] Many prisoner lists show the number of family members held, but this list only shows the head of household. Given that reportedly every one of the thirty Acadian Bergerons who immigrated to Louisiana came from prisoner of war camps in Nova Scotia,[3] Charles at the age of 7 years would have been there with his family.

Upon release, the extended Bergeron families sailed in November 1764 with French resistance fighter, Joseph Broussard on a hired British ship to St. Domingue (Haiti) where they changed to a ship named Santo Domingo, and landed in New Orleans sometime in February 1765.[3][6][7]

The family settled in Attakapas, Louisiana, but tragedy soon struck. Charles lost his father, 11-year old brother Jean Baptiste fils, infant brother Joseph, and newborn sister Marianne in an epidemic the summer and fall of 1765.[3][7][8]The elder Jean Baptiste was buried November 23, 1765 and 15-month old Joseph in October of the same year.[8] Charles's great uncle, Augustin, succumbed to the epidemic also, and was buried August 31,1765.[8]

After the loss of her husband and three of her children, Charles' mother moved the family to what would later be called St Jacques de Cabanoce in St James Parish, in order to escape the epidemic.[3] There are a number of transcriptions of the 1766 Census for St. James to Donaldsonville which show Catherine and her family living with Mathurin Landry.[9][10]

In all of my research on this family I have never seen anyone mention this as odd. It would normally imply that they had married, but this is unlikely, as she had just lost her husband and three of her children to an epidemic. Additionally, I have not found one family tree that notes a marriage between them.

I did see (and initially couldn't find) one person note that she was the head of household with her children and brother, living on a certain number of arpents, etc.... with no mention of Mathurin. I contacted the Louisiana Historical Society to help me with this question... was Mathurin living in the household next door and one transcription error has been perpetuated? Their "too quick" response was that widows often moved in with other family members like brothers, etc. [Note June 2014: I have received communication from a Paul Le Blanc stating that "Archives General de Indies Papeles de Cuba, 187A" shows them as two different households.] [Note April 2015: I have obtained a copy of "Some Late Eighteenth-Century Louisianans" by Jacqueline K. Voorhies[11] and it has a more accurate depiction of the census.]

Living on the left bank:

  • Mathurin Landry, age 29, lives on 6 arpents of land and has one firearm.
  • Catherine Quessy, widow Bergeron, is age 30 and lives on 4 arpents of land and also has one firearm. She lives with her 12-year old son Jean-Baptiste, her 10-year old son Charles, her 16-year old daughter Magdelaine, her 14-year old daughter Ositte, and her 21-year old brother Joseph Quessy.[11]

But there is another census taken of Judice's Company of militiamen and the inhabitants on both sides of the Mississippi. [12] It shows Mathurin Landry with no numbers in the columns for men, women, etc. and it shows Catharine Quessi, widow of Bergeron in a household consisting of 1 woman, 2 men, 2 boys, and no girls. This particular census has no date, but the other militia censuses were all dated in early April 1766.

Charles's mother died in 1767 and he was orphaned. He appeared on the 1769 census living on the right bank of the Mississippi in the same area as before, with a Bergeron relative and her family:

Pierre Arceneaux, age 38; Anne Bergeron, wife 28; Rosalie, daughter 5; Marie Jeanne, daughter 3; Francoise, daughter 10 mos; Firmin Arceneaux orphan, 15; Charles Bergeron, orphan, 11.[13][14]

His Adult Years

The next we hear of Charles is when he married Marie Forest on October 4, 1779 in what is now Ascension Parish.[15]

They had at least six children, including one who died shortly after birth. Marie died in 1793. [16]

There are two different dates for his second marriage, to Victoire Marie Benoit. One is from a set of succession papers; it says January 4, 1794.[17] The other is from church records at Assumption of Plattenville Parish; it says they were married January 7, 1794.[18] According to his Terrebonne Parish probate file, the 4 Jan 1794 is the date of their marriage contract.[19] They went on to have at least nine more children before Charles died. The Acadian Memorial Database indicates he died on October 6, 1801[20] but this can't be correct since he had children after that.

He had two successions filed: 1) 5 Jan 1808 in Lafourche Parish[21] and 1 December 1810 in Terrebonne Parish.[22] The 1805 succession seems to be the original succession although attempts to obtain a copy have been difficult so far, but Donna Storz is continuing efforts. The earliest dated item in the succession file is the public auction notice for the sale of the late Charles Bergeron's estate and it is dated 6 Aug 1808.[19] Until more is known and totally disregarding two children born after his death, I will put his death at before 6 Aug. 1808.

The succession from 1810 shows that it was a follow up to his previous succession in which his widow stated that the administrator and future state governor, Henry Schuyler Thibodaux Esq. "took into his possession all the interest or estate" of Charles Bergeron and therefore owed her a payment of $200 promised in their 1794 marriage contract to be returned to her in the event of Charles Bergeron's death.[19] Charles' children from his first marriage also received a share of the remains equal to $106.77 minus money they apparently received from their father prior to his death: Pierre and Jean Baptiste each received $66.77, Marguerite received $23.77, Marie received $8.00, and Alexandre received $106.00, and of course the widow Victoire Benoit received $200.00.[19]

Known Children with Marie Forest

  1. Marguerite Bergeron bn. 27 Aug 1780;[23] She wed Pierre Joseph Guidry, the son of Pierre Janvier Guidry and Marie Josephe Lebert on 14 Jan 1798.[24] and on 22 August 1821,Jean Baptiste Beausergent[25] the son of Albert Beausergeant and Marie Duplechin.
  2. Marie Anne Bergeron bn. 20 Aug 1783
  3. Pierre Charles Bergeron baptized 22 Jan 1786
  4. Baby Boy Bergeron buried as an infant on [26]
  5. Jean Baptiste Bergeron baptized 16 Nov 1788
  6. Alexandre Bergeron bn. 21 Aug 1792[27]

Known Children with Victoire Marie Benoit

  1. Eloise Bergeron bn. 11 Oct 1794[28]
  2. Pierre Paul Rosemond Bergeron bn. 26 Feb 1795 per cited source, but this makes him born 4 months after Eloise... suspect born in 1796, especially since Eloise baptized 3 May 1796 and he wasn't baptized until August 1796.
  3. Guillaume Bergeron bn. ca 1794-1796[29][30]
  4. Jean Charles Bergeron bn. 7 December 1799 [31]
  5. Adelaide Clara Bergeron bn 16 Aug 1801[32]
  6. Pierre Celestine Bergeron bn 3 Feb 1803 [33]
  7. Magdeleine Victoire Bergeron bn 23 Apr 1806[34]
  8. Marcellin Vital Bergeron bn 22 Nov 1809[35] There are questions since his father reportedly died in 1808 which would be too soon for him to father a child born in late November 1809.
  9. Arsene Bergeron bn. ca 1810[36][37] Like, Marcellin Vital Bergeron, there appears to be a problem with either her year of birth or her parentage considering her father died in 1808.

No. 496. Charles Bergeron claims a tract of land, situate on both sides of the bayou Darbonne, in the county of La Fourche, containing one thousand three hundred and thirty-four and fifty-eight hundredths superficial acres, and adjoining on one side to the land of Thomas de Villanueva. It appearing that the claimant did actually settle this land, with the permission of the proper Spanish officer, prior to the 20th December 1803, and that he inhabited and cultivated the same on that day, the Board confirm the claim to the quantity of six hundred and forty acres, and reject it as to the balance.

In my own tree I discount the Acadian Memorial Database date. I don't know why I added it here unless it was before I had the SLR books and never caught the discrepancies. In my own personal tree I use the Dec 1810 succession as a before date for his death... possibly thinking that the Acadian Memorial Database might be a typo for 1810 meaning he died 6 Oct 1810 instead of in 1801 or that it is the "safest" date considering we don't know the details of the two successions. He is my 3x great grandfather so I'll look into getting copies of his successions but in the meantime I suggest changing date to bef. 1 Dec 1810.

Come to think about it I used the 1810 date because of a daughter born abt 1810... Arsene, she was married in 1817 at the age of 17 yrs.

Okay, so are we going to correct the death data here to relfect that information?

Thanks for the info.

I removed date for now and added discussion of dates. I've also contacted both parishes where he had successions and one has found the succession and will send me a copy once I pay. I have contacted the other parish.

I received copies of the 1810 Terrebonne Parish succession today and have updated the bio and date of death. The 1810 filing is a filing of his widow against his administrator in order to obtain money promised in her marriage contract with Charles Bergeron. The documents don't seem to include the entire succession except for mostly what happened after the widow filed for the money. So I'm trying again to get information from Lafourche Parish on that 1808 succession... of course I still run into problems with the DOB of the last two children. The earliest document in the packet I received was dated 6 Aug 1808 and clearly states Charles Bergeron is deceased as it is the notice for the public auction of his estate. I'm a bit stumped as to the last 2 children.

Ok, I've been on Family Search.org trying to verify a few issues with this. He is deceased in 1801 but Victoire has 5 more children afterwards ?????

There's also a property transaction in 1802 that I found with Charles Forest.

What had me annoyed there wad that someone indexed his 2nd marriage as 1784 which would have made him a bigamist. Going back there to clean up that mess.

Thank's Karin. I believe it stems from a while ago when I had the parents of Jean Baptiste confused. It wasn't until I received the Bergeron pages of SAW's draft version of DGFA 1715 -1780 that I had clarity about it. I've fixed it.

Why does the notes say Charles grandfather Augustin and father Jean Baptiste and the ancestor the ancestor section has his grandpa listed as Barthelemy II (paternal) Michel Joseph (maternal)? data and bio info don't match. Please clarify.
