Biography

James Berkeley was the son of Sir Maurice Berkeley and his wife Isabel Meade, who had married in 1465.[1] Maurice and Isabel had three sons and one daughter: Maurice, K.B., Thomas, Knt., James, and Anne.[1] James was born after 1472,[2] in Thornbury,[3] Gloucestershire, England.[4]

Around 1498, James married Susan FitzAlan, who was born about 1476 at Arundel, Sussex, England, daughter of William, son of Sir William FitzAlan, Earl of Arundel.

James and Susan had at least one daughter:[4][5]

  • Mary Berkeley (b. c 1500), m 1st Thomas Perrot, 2nd Thomas Johnes

Ancestry of Mary Berkeley:[6]

"Isabella Mowbray, m. James, 6th Lord Berkeley, d. 1463, leaving a son, Maurice, Lord Berkeley, who, by Isabella, dau. of Philip Meade, Esq., of Bristol, had issue
"Sir James Berkeley, Kt., Esquire of the Body to King Henry VII. He m. Susan, dau. and h. of William Fitzalan, of Bristol, and had issue a dau.,
"Mary, who m., 1st, Sir Thomas Perrot, Kt., of Haroldstone, co. of Pembr.; and, Sir Thomas Johnes, Kt., of Abermarlais, co. of Carm., and by him became the mother of the said James Johnes, of Llanbadarn-fawr."

James Berkeley died about 1515.[4]

Locations

Gloucestershire, England

location of Berkeley Castle, Bristol, and Thornbury. Thornbury is between Bristol and Berkeley (see this map).

Berkeley Castle

James was probably not born at Berkeley Castle.[7] His father Maurice married the daughter of the mayor of Bristol. Maurice's brother disapproved & disinherited him (their father had died in 1463 & Maurice "married beneath him" in 1465, so it is doubtful any of Maurice's children were born at the castle). Maurice "was heir in 1492 to his older brother."[1]

Bristol

Birthplace of James' wife Isabel Mead.[8]

Thornbury

James was called "of Thornbury" but was probably not born there (his birth year is guessed to be 1472). In 1474, his grandfather and uncle (Philip Mead, Burgess of Bristol, and his son Richard, respectively), "conveyed to Maurice and his wife Isabel (daughter of the said Philip) a tenement in Thornbury, Gloucestershire called Marshallis Place with a garden and close attached."[1]

Research Notes

Estimated dates: Birth date is after parents' marriage (1465), and probably after 1472 (date of birth for brother Thomas, second son of Maurice and Isabel and heir to older brother Maurice). 1465 and 1472 dates from Richardson's Magna Carta Ancestry (#MCA). Marriage of "before 1500" is based on Mary's birth c 1500.

Highly probable daughter Joyce Berkely (assuming she was born after 1498), who married William Stumpe by 1519, would then have been the mother of James Stumpe (abt.1510-1563).

update: I added a "Locations" section to his profile

James was called "of Thornbury, Gloucestershire" but I think he may have been born in Bristol. His father Maurice married the daughter of the mayor of Bristol. Maurice's brother disapproved & disinherited him (their father had died in 1463 & Maurice "married beneath him" in 1465, so it's doubtful any of Maurice's children were born at the castle).

update: merge was completed.

Berkley-33 and Berkeley-494 appear to represent the same person because: Hi! these profiles are for the same person and should be merged. The family name is Berkeley (made it to America spelled that way too - Governor Berkeley of Virginia), so Berkeley-494 is protected to facilitate merges of duplicates into it. Daughter Mary married first Perrot then Johnes. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!

Berkeley-494 and De Berkeley-64 appear to represent the same person because: Hi! these profiles are for the same person and should be merged. EuroAristo naming guidelines call for "de" to not be included in the LNAB field, so Berkeley-494 is protected to facilitate merges of duplicates into it. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!
