Johann Franz Theodor Berken was born April 17, 1852 in Sundern, Germany, to Franz Berken (1823-1899) and Anna Maria Elisabeth (Schümer) Berken (1830-1913). He had two brothers and five sisters. The family moved to Bruchhausen around 1865. They then moved to Hüsten, Röhre, and back to Hüsten.
Franz worked as a weighmaster at Hoesch Iron and Steelworks in Dortmund from 1884 until his death. He was living at Kirchdernerstraße 80 in 1884 and 1885. He married Anna Catharine Ferdinandine (Schulte) Berken (1859-aft.1915) in Hüsten on February 13, 1885. They had nine children. They lived at Schlosserstraße 32 in Dortmund and later moved to Schlosserstraße 56.
He died at 10:30 on the morning of February 7, 1910 at Schlosserstraße 56 in Dortmund. His funeral was at the Dreifaltigkeitskirche on February 10.
