Biography

John was born about 1725. He was the son of William Berkley. It seems that his family changed their name's spelling from "Berkeley" to "Berkley" at this time. It is suspected that this is due to an unpopular governor of the name Berkeley at the time, who may have encouraged John Berkeley to change his name to avoid association with him. He passed away about 1800.
