MARIA TILITHA BERKSHIRE (ca 1780 – ca 1840)
The AUDITOR’S REPORT ON JESSE DICKEN ESTATE dated November ?, 1854, Bedford, PA does not show the name of Maria Tilitha. Isaac Dicken, a son, was the administrator. He was appointed October 31, 1852. The amount of $638.62 was “to be distributed among the 12 children (or issue of children) of said deceased, Deborah, daughter of said deceased, and intermarried with Jacob Fletcher, died previously to her father’s death leaving issue six children who are entitled to one-twelfth, therefore there is hereby distributed to

The distribution was signed by the court on November 20, 1854, Bedford., PA.
Inscription records of cemetery stones sent from the 1st United Methodist Church, New Lexington, OH shows that Jesse died September 27, 1852. He was age 75 years, 7 month, 21 days. The children of Isaac Gruber and Maria Dicken are buried there also. Isaac Gruber died June 2, 1845. C. Dillon Gruber died June 19, 1851 age 1 year, 11 months. Jess Gruber died November 3, 1862 age 19 years, 5 months, 26 days. He was a Civil War veteran.
Another source says that Jesse was age 75 years, 7 months, 21 days when he died in 1852 and that he indeed married Maria Tilitha daughter of Hanson Berkshire.
Figuring Jesse’s birthdate mathematically it would have been February 6, 1777. Mrs. Robert B. Dicken of LaHabra, CA also state that Jesse was born in Southampton Twp., Bedford Co., PA.
It is believed that MARIA TILITHA was born between 1780 and 1781 in Washington Co., MD and died between 1830 and 1850. The marriage with Jesse was sometime near 1800, (Debora born about 1800, Dorcas born 1802 and Elizabeth born about 1804). Jesse may have gone to Perry Co., OH to live near his children, Malinda Dicken Perdew and Maria Dicken Gruber who lived in Perry Co. Other children lived in nearby counties.
Jesse was the son of Amos Dicken who was born at Beans Cove, Southampton Twp. According to DAR records. Dorcas D. Dicken was the mother of Jesse. She died in 1827. Amos was born about 1744 and a private in the Revolutionary War.
All of the children of Jesse were born in Bedford Co.. A family group sheet from Terry Diehl, Belle Vernon, PA shows ANSON Sr. the father of MARY TILITHA. Also, that Anson Sr’s. wife was Hannah Bennett, daughter of Joseph and Rachael Bennett.
Family information from several sources and censuses show the following children.
Brothers and sisters of Jesse Dicken, husband of Maria Tilitha were Stephen, Isaac C., Moses J., Amos, Johanthon [Jonathan] H., Tamor, Mary H., Elizabeth, Ruth.
The Dicken and Berkshire families lived in close proximity in Southern Bedford Co.. Most likely there were close friendships and possibly business transactions between the families.
