MARIA TILITHA BERKSHIRE (ca 1780 – ca 1840)

The AUDITOR’S REPORT ON JESSE DICKEN ESTATE dated November ?, 1854, Bedford, PA does not show the name of Maria Tilitha. Isaac Dicken, a son, was the administrator. He was appointed October 31, 1852. The amount of $638.62 was “to be distributed among the 12 children (or issue of children) of said deceased, Deborah, daughter of said deceased, and intermarried with Jacob Fletcher, died previously to her father’s death leaving issue six children who are entitled to one-twelfth, therefore there is hereby distributed to

To:

Jacob Fletcher

Judith intermarried with Joshua Wilson
Mary Fletcher

And to the remaining children of Jesse dicken or their alienees is distributed as follows

To:

Benjamin Mills alienee of Dorcas intermarried with Gov. (George?) Robinson

Louisa intermarried with N. D. Smith
N. D. Smith alienee of Moses Dicken and Malinda intermarried with Wm. Perdew.”

The distribution was signed by the court on November 20, 1854, Bedford., PA.

Inscription records of cemetery stones sent from the 1st United Methodist Church, New Lexington, OH shows that Jesse died September 27, 1852. He was age 75 years, 7 month, 21 days. The children of Isaac Gruber and Maria Dicken are buried there also. Isaac Gruber died June 2, 1845. C. Dillon Gruber died June 19, 1851 age 1 year, 11 months. Jess Gruber died November 3, 1862 age 19 years, 5 months, 26 days. He was a Civil War veteran.

Another source says that Jesse was age 75 years, 7 months, 21 days when he died in 1852 and that he indeed married Maria Tilitha daughter of Hanson Berkshire.

Figuring Jesse’s birthdate mathematically it would have been February 6, 1777. Mrs. Robert B. Dicken of LaHabra, CA also state that Jesse was born in Southampton Twp., Bedford Co., PA.

It is believed that MARIA TILITHA was born between 1780 and 1781 in Washington Co., MD and died between 1830 and 1850. The marriage with Jesse was sometime near 1800, (Debora born about 1800, Dorcas born 1802 and Elizabeth born about 1804). Jesse may have gone to Perry Co., OH to live near his children, Malinda Dicken Perdew and Maria Dicken Gruber who lived in Perry Co. Other children lived in nearby counties.

Jesse was the son of Amos Dicken who was born at Beans Cove, Southampton Twp. According to DAR records. Dorcas D. Dicken was the mother of Jesse. She died in 1827. Amos was born about 1744 and a private in the Revolutionary War.

All of the children of Jesse were born in Bedford Co.. A family group sheet from Terry Diehl, Belle Vernon, PA shows ANSON Sr. the father of MARY TILITHA. Also, that Anson Sr’s. wife was Hannah Bennett, daughter of Joseph and Rachael Bennett.

Family information from several sources and censuses show the following children.

DEBORAH Dicken born about 1800 married Jacob Fletcher. She died pre-1852 and possibly as early as pre 1833. Judith was her daughter who married Joshua Wilson and lived in Hocking Co., OH in 1852. Deborah is supposedly the oldest daughter of Jesse.
DORCAS Dicken born about 1802 married George Robinson.
ELIZABETH “Betsy” Dicken born January 6, 1804 died July 15, 1874 married John Gordon.
ISAAC C. Dicken born September 1805 died January 10 1885 married (1) Mary (Donahue?), (2) Hester Ann Gordon.
JOHN BERKSHIRE Dicken born August 13, 1807 died September 15, 1892. He lived in Hocking Co.. Married Louisa A. Wilson August 30, 1834, Cumberland, MD. Lived in Hocking Co. in 1852. Robert Bruce Dicken Sr. (1900-1982), late husband of Mabel Marie (Zents) Dicken, LaHabra, CA is a descendant. Interestingly, the name MARY TILITHA DICKEN (Mary) born 1837 Bedford Co., PA was a daughter of John Berkshire Dicken. She married William Williams on March 3, 1855
PERCILLA (Priscilla) born March 18, 1813 died July 19, 1891 married Archibald Perdew August 7, 1831. Their children: Elijah, Jesse, Rebecca, Ann, Melinda, Nathan, John, Mary E., George, Sarah L., Neri, Wiliam, Alice Jane. Granddaughters of Archibald and Percilla: Leona Perdew Ingraham born ca 1897 was living in Euegne, Or in 1989. Her first cousin, Gladys Perdew Yetts was living in Portland, OR in 1989.
MARIA Dicken married Isaac Gruber. Lived in Perry Co., OH 1852
AMOS R. Dicken born 1816 married Maria Barnd [Barud] July 2, 1846. Lived in Hocking Co., OH in 1852.
ABRAHAM A. Dicken born January 2, 1818 died September 18, 1885 married Mary Elizabeth Gross December 31, 1840
LOUISA Dicken married Neri D. Smith May 5, 1842, Lived in Allegany Co., MD in 1852
MOSES Dicken born 1813 or 1815 died January 3, 1867 or 1877 Southampton Twp., married Matilda S. Miles [Mills]. Lived in Monroe and Southampton Twp., Bedford Co., PA.
MALINDA Dicken born May 14, 1823 died March 16, 1884, Nodaway Co., MO. She married William Perdew and lived in Perry Co., in 1852 and 1860.

Brothers and sisters of Jesse Dicken, husband of Maria Tilitha were Stephen, Isaac C., Moses J., Amos, Johanthon [Jonathan] H., Tamor, Mary H., Elizabeth, Ruth.

The Dicken and Berkshire families lived in close proximity in Southern Bedford Co.. Most likely there were close friendships and possibly business transactions between the families.

  • Another line from Maria Tilitha Berkshire has been provided by Terry Diehl of Belle Vernon, PA.
  • Further pedigree was found in a 1963 copy of THE TREESEARCHER, a quarterly of the Kansas Genealogical Society.
