Obituary:[1]

Martha of Norway Dies at 53, Princess Lived Here in War

Had been victim of liver ailment for three years.

Oslo, Norway, April 5 (AP)--Crown Princess Martha of Norway, 53 died today. She had suffered for three years from chronic hepatitis, a liver ailment.

The princess, wife of Crown Prince Olaf, was taken to the state hospital march 13 following severe hemorrhages. For a time she rallied but suffered a serious setback early yesterday and lapsed into a coma.

She had visited the United States several times and spent five war years at Bethesda, Md., in exile from the Nazis.

At her bedside when she died were her father-in-law, Norway's 81-year-old King Haakon VII, her husband, and their three children--Prince Harold, 16; Princess Ragnhild, 23; and Princess Astrid, 22. Her mother, Princess Ingeborg of Sweden, and her brother-in-law and sister, Prince Axel and Princess Margrethe of Denmark, also were present.

Princess Popular Here in Civic and Social Affairs

Crown Princess Martha of Norway, who died eoday in Oslo, became a popular part of the civic and well as social scene during the 5 years she lived in Bethesda with her three children.

Finding refuge here at the invitation of President Roosevelt, the charming princess in 1941 bought for $252,000 the 25-room estate known as Pooks Hill and built by Merle Thorpe. The Nazi invasion of Norway forced the princess to flee, with Prince Olav and the children.

She was no stranger here, for in 1939 the royal couple had enjoyed a 10-week tour of the country, stopping in Washington three days. On that visit they dined on hot dogs and potato salad at the Roosevelt cottage at Hyde Park, and on fried chicken and Smithfield ham at restored Williamsburg.

Those with whom she came in contact found Princess Martha unassuming and democratic. They saw her and the children attend neighborhood movies, like any other housewife, and during the period of a rationing , insist she use her automobile no more than necessary.

But at affairs of state, she was just as impressive in other ways.

A society reporter described her at a diplomatic reception as "a picture to behold--no lovelier gown could be even imagined than this dress worn by the beautiful woman from across the sea."

Princess Martha took part in goodwill events, such as an anniversary celebration of Girl Scouts, to which her own girls, Princesses Ragnhild and Astrid belonged. The Crow and Blackfeet Indian tribes made her an honorary member.

During her stay an effort was made by State Department officials to waive the Maryland income tax, but the State decreed she must pay even though a guest of the government.

The Swedish-born princess passed her 53rd birthday just last week and a week earlier had celebrated her 25th wedding anniversary with Prince Olav.

She was born March 28, 1901, the second eldest daughter of the late Prince Carl and Princess Ingeborg of Sweden. She grew up at Fridhem Castle with her two sister, the late Queen Astrid of Belgium and Princess Margrethe, and her brother, the younger Prince Carl.

She and Prince Olav were married in a gala wedding at Oslo March 21, 1929. Among the hundreds of titled guests were Britain's Duke and Duchess of York, later to become King George VI and Queen Elizabeth.
