Son of Sacramento and Guadalupe (Quihuiz) Bernal, born at Tres Álamos, which, by the 1890s, was little more than a rural farming and ranching community, which were the trades that his family followed. It appears likely that he did not know his birthday, as numerous mentions of it have been inconsistent: April of 1893 as recorded in the 1900 Census;[1] Jan. 22, 1892, on his World War I draft registration card; and Apr. 1, 1892, on both his delayed birth certificate and his World War II card. Both his parents were born in Sonora, Mexico, his father from Hermosillo and his mother from Magdalena. They settled near Tres Álamos, several miles downstream from Benson, sometime likely in the mid- to late-1880s.
In 1910 he was recorded as a ranch-hand, along with several of his brothers, on his father's property.[2] His family were members of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Benson, where he was married to Beatriz Ohnesorgen on Sept. 4, 1916. The Ohnesorgen family was well-acquainted with the Bernal family, farming and ranching in the same general area of Benson, with two of Ysidro's siblings also marrying into their family. On Jun. 5, 1917, he is counted among many of Benson who registered for the draft during World War I,[3] being described as a short man of medium build, with brown eyes and dark hair. He is working for a Ramon Vasquez, of St. David, as a farmer and laborer.
By 1930, he is working as a laborer for the Apache Powder Company (APC), residing on Walker Street, Benson;[4] in 1940, he is living on Mark Street, close by, recorded as a "box-maker", again for the APC.[5] He registered for the draft during World War II on Apr. 27, 1942, at Willcox;[6] he is described as a man standing 5'4" and weighing 145 pounds, with hazel eyes, black hair, and a light complexion. He and his wife saw three sons and three daughters live to adulthood, though their youngest son Armando died unexpectedly in 1960. He was interred at High Street Cemetery.[7]
