Biography

Richard was the fifth son of Francis Bernard and Alice Haselwood.[1][2][3] His birth date is not known, but the third son, Francis, was born in 1558, he had seven sisters, and he himself first married in 1600.[2][3] Against that background is has been estimated as about 1570. (Marlyn Lewis gives an estimate of about 1578, citing Douglas Richardson, who actually gives no birth date, and should be relied on.[4] He may have been born at Abington, Northamptonshire where his father had property.[2][3]

Richard married twice. His first wife was Alice Chibnall, daughter of John Chibnall of Astwood, Buckinghamshire and widow of William Adams. They married at Astwood on 24 October 1600. Alice was buried at Turvey, Bedfordshire on 24 April 1606.[2][3]

His second wife was Elizabeth Woolhouse, daughter of Anthony Woolhouse, a London haberdasher (also of Glapwell, Derbyshire), and Millicent Strelley.[5] Richard's will refers to a daughter, Elizabeth Morley, of his wife by a previous marriage, so presumably she was a widow, possibly with her first husband having the surname Morley (though this may have been the married name of Richard's stepdaughter).[6] She was a sister of Mary Woolhouse who married Richard's brother Francis.[2][3] They had three children:

Richard had property at Turvey, Bedfordshire and Great Coddington, Northamptonshire.[2][3]

Richard was buried at Great Doddington, Northamptonshire on 24 April 1613.[2][3][7] His will, dated 20 February 1612/3, was proved on 16 June 1613.[2][3] It describes him as of Turvey, Bedfordshire, which may be where he died. In out, among other provisions, he:[6]

  • requested burial at Great Doddington, Northamptonshire
  • left property to his wife Elizabeth for her life
  • named:
    • his eldest son Richard
    • his second son Bernard
    • his daughter Alice
  • gave his wife custody of their children and appointed her sole executor

Magna Carta Project

This profile was re-reviewed for the Magna Carta Project by Michael Cayley on 19 October 2022.
Richard Bernard was identified by the Magna Carta Project in a trail from Gateway Ancestor Richard Bernard to Magna Carta Surety Baron John FitzRobert that was project approved/badged in March 2015. Over time, the project identified this profile in other badged trails from Richard Bernard to surety barons Roger le Bigod, Hugh le Bigod, Richard de Clare, Gilbert de Clare, John de Lacy and Saher de Quincy. Richard Bernard also appears in Magna Carta Ancestry in a Richardson-documented trail from Richard Bernard to surety baron Robert de Ros (vol. 1, pages 186-188 BERNARD) and another trail, to surety William d'Aubigny branches off the Ros trail, that were badged in October 2022. All the trails named above are outlined in the Magna Carta Trails section of Richard Bernard's profile.
See Base Camp for more information about identified Magna Carta trails and their status. See the project's glossary for project-specific terms, such as a "badged trail".

Richard Bernard, married (2nd) Elizabeth Woolhouse, daughter of Anthony Woolhouse, Gent., by Milicent, daughter of John Strelley (died 1559), vintner of London. They had two sons, Richard, Gent., and John, and one daughter, Alice.

Thank you!

Merging profile based on Family Note of 'double first cousin's', Mary is not noted as daughter of first two wives, perhaps she needs to be moved to the brother Richard. Research to be done.

Bernard-2200 and Bernard-93 appear to represent the same person because: Same person births are estimates

Bernard-2467 and Bernard-93 appear to represent the same person because: The dates are pretty far off in the duplicate profile, but this is part of a duplication of a branch of Queen Elizabeth's tree. The family relationships all match.

Just an FYI - this profile has been identified for a Magna Carta Trail. We'll be working on this line shortly. Bernard-702 and Bernard-93 appear to represent the same person because: they have the same name and the same father, the same death location and year. See sources on Bernard-93 please!
