Biography

Rupert Lyon Bowes Bernard was born at New Town, Hobart, Tasmania, on 25 February, 1895.^[1] He was the son of George Claude Bernard and Elizabeth Kate Walker.

He married Doris Auburn Banks-Smith at St John's Church, Gordon, New South Wales, on 16 March 1922.^[2][3] She died giving birth to a son on the 23rd of February, 1923,^[4]

During World War I he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force at Sydney on 10 September 1915 claiming to be 20 years and 8 months of age. He served until 1919 in Egypt and France as a driver.^[5][6]

Rupert remarried to English immigrant Norah Mabel Springthorpe at St Clement, Mosman, on 21 Nov 1925.^[7][8]

In World War II he enlisted as a member of the Volunteer Defence Corps.^[9]

He died on 22 Mar 1969.^[10][11]
